...that's what might be next in Arizona, if the Governor signs legislation into law. According to Media Matters, this means that anyone who doesn't carry the proper paperwork could be arrested. Moreover, the Arizona approach is not only misguided, it's expensive. Plus in these days of extra concern over government spending, no doubt comprehensive immigration reform is the better option.
But why talk about Arizona on Blue Hampshire? Think that can't happen here, too?
NH's own Union Leader editorial page supports Arizona's steps towards a police state, according to an editorial last Friday. This editorial makes a few erroneous claims, such as equating immigration reform with amnesty (which it is not) and assuming that our businesses and economy have no dependence on immigrants (they do.)
The one thing we can all agree upon is that our current immigration system is broken and needs to be fixed. Reform Immigration FOR America is working for reform that:
Creates millions of new taxpayers by requiring undocumented immigrants to register, go through background checks, pay taxes, and study English on their way to becoming full U.S. citizens
Enhances our national security by focusing our enforcement and security measures on the most dangerous threats to our communities
Protects workers and helps with economic recovery
Keeps families together
Protects the due process rights of all
That's just the start of what I could say about immigration reform.
If you are already supportive of immigration reform, you can sign up here, join the text network here, or fax your members of congress here.
Also, I'm hopeful that you can join us on Friday, April 30th in Manchester. For more details about that or our other activities, please email me - kschultz AT reformimmigrationforamerica.org.
Would any of you be interested in a few more diary postings leading up to next week's Immigrants Day rally in Manchester? I'm considering posting about a different component to immigration in each diary post, such as highlighting the positive contributions that immigrants make to NH's economy, how families are torn apart by our broken immigration system, and how immigration reform can solve a few economic & human rights problems that current plague our country - unbeknown to most of us.
Also, perhaps you have questions, concerns or thoughts about immigration reform that you'd like to pose. Would that be of interest to any of you?
UPDATE 4/23/2010:It's going to be a very rough day in Arizona. The Governor is likely to be signing this bill - SB1070. Would it surprise you to know that she's facing a tough GOP primary in late August? As the deadline for the bill looms large, students walked out of their classrooms across Arizona today in protest, and thousands of opponents of the measure continue to hold a vigil.
Note: I'm the NH State Director for the Reform Immigration FOR America campaign, which is promoting comprehensive immigration reform. I'm also a 5th generation German & Irish immigrant.
