How a State House Special Election Affects the Nation

by: Dean Barker

Tue Jun 02, 2009 at 05:51:50 AM EDT

Karen Liot Hill explains the situation well:
"Democrats are favored in Lebanon, according to party registration and voter behavior," she said. "About two-thirds of registered voters in Lebanon vote Democratic. In theory, there should be a good turnout for Democrats. But in a special election, when turnout is extremely low, it starts to make the advantage not so certain."

The vote on the amendment to the marriage equality bill scheduled in the state House for June 3 also raises the stakes of the election, Liot Hill said.

"If [White] wins the election on Tuesday, he can help make a serious difference in a matter of 24 hours on the issue of marriage equality," Liot Hill said.

But before you get too excited:
Democrat Andrew White, a fire captain, estimates that Randy Wagoner, his Republican opponent and an emergency dispatcher, is outspending him "four or five to one."
The piece goes on to confirm that this money is coming outside of Lebanon.

So when I read Out-of-State-Marriage-Hater-in-Chief Maggie Gallagher mischaracterize our local elections like this...

In both of the two special elections held in New Hampshire in the past month, the pro-gay marriage candidate got trounced. But you haven't heard much about New Hampshire in the national news media because it doesn't fit gay marriage advocates' narrative: They claim the debate is over; gay marriage has won.
...I wonder where this money is coming from.

Maggie Gallagher Uncovers Our Great Gay Overlord

by: Dean Barker

Oh dear. I just knew someday one of the shadows on the wall of the cave where William F. Buckley used to live would find out our big secret.
New Hampshire is one of the state legislatures that Tim Gill money helped flip for the Democrats.
That's right - if it weren't for Lord Sith of Teh Gays, we'd still be in our rightful red status.

The Soothing Comfort of the Echo Chamber

by: Dean Barker

Mon May 04, 2009 at 19:12:16 PM EDT

Oh, Maggie.  The soothing comfort of the echo chamber must really feel nice after a loss:
How did gay-marriage advocates persuade New Hampshire Dems in the state senate to narrowly support gay marriage? They got the national Democratic party to threaten state senators with retaliation if they didn't tow the line, such as primary opponents, or even moving the presidential primary date out of NH. That's how.
This is what passes snuff at the National Review these days? A known anti-marriage activist getting her reasons for HB436's passage from a fake news article filled with made-up stuff?

(Sure, after the judiciary vote, we made some noises about looking around for candidates here on BH, but getting "the national Democratic party to threaten state senators with retaliation"? Please. That's just laughable on its face.)

Part of me wonders, though, if an echo chamber fueled myth such as this isn't the best outcome?  After all, won't that make the right even less attuned to the electorate than they already are, and give marriage equality a better chance of passage in other states?

Adding: Please, please, please, Joe the Plumber, run for president.  You can start right here in the first-in-the-nation primary state!
