The Soothing Comfort of the Echo Chamber

by: Dean Barker

Mon May 04, 2009 at 19:12:16 PM EDT

Oh, Maggie.  The soothing comfort of the echo chamber must really feel nice after a loss:
How did gay-marriage advocates persuade New Hampshire Dems in the state senate to narrowly support gay marriage? They got the national Democratic party to threaten state senators with retaliation if they didn't tow the line, such as primary opponents, or even moving the presidential primary date out of NH. That's how.
This is what passes snuff at the National Review these days? A known anti-marriage activist getting her reasons for HB436's passage from a fake news article filled with made-up stuff?

(Sure, after the judiciary vote, we made some noises about looking around for candidates here on BH, but getting "the national Democratic party to threaten state senators with retaliation"? Please. That's just laughable on its face.)

Part of me wonders, though, if an echo chamber fueled myth such as this isn't the best outcome?  After all, won't that make the right even less attuned to the electorate than they already are, and give marriage equality a better chance of passage in other states?

Adding: Please, please, please, Joe the Plumber, run for president.  You can start right here in the first-in-the-nation primary state!

Honestly, this Maggie character, her misfit crew of Mormons and federal goverment overthrowers and their ilk are really something. Not to mention they all have many skeletons in their closets.

Fear mongering and lying, and then claiming to be the victims and say their freedom of speech is being violated when they're corrected. I've really had enough of them, I hope they get involved in the Maine referendum in November and we kick their asses so hard that they leave New England alone forever.

Authoritarianism is a one-way street. There's no provision for (0.00 / 0)
feedback or correction.  Perhaps that's it's biggest drawback; it doesn't adjust to changed circumstance--a characteristic that's shared with monopolies.

The problem is that people listen to them. (0.00 / 0)
People watch Fox News.

"Tow the line?" (4.00 / 6)
Give me a break.  The National Review publishes someone who can't tell the difference between "tow" and "toe?"  WFB must be revolving in his grave.

Yeah, the National Dems (4.00 / 2)
Just love Blue Hampshire. Because they are so aligned with us.

Our State Senators, are, on occassion, timid. But compared to the national party as a whole, they are far in front.

And that's because New Hampshire has always been in front of movements, not behind them. That was a bane when the country trended right, but we were clearly the early distant warning on the liberal earthquake that hit this country, and with any luck we will continue to lead, not follow.

The idea that New Hampshire is less liberal than the national party is quaint, ahistoric, and generally ignorant.

A good summary for her on this is here: http://www.bluehampshire.com/s...

Assuming she actually ever wants to be an analyst, and not just a foot soldier in the Republican army.

New Hampshire was the barometer that raced ahead of the country, showing where we were headed in 2004, and it continues to lead, not follow.

in at least one iteration of his 2008 model, included a "swinginess" variable for each state; i.e. its propensity to move more, less, or the same as the national race. NH was just about the swingiest, that is, moved more than the national average. NH also has this interesting thing, that the state as a whole is pretty electorally homogeneous—yes, there are some towns pretty far out of the statewide results, but no counties: a quick glance shows all were between 51% and 67% Obama in two-party vote. We don't have anywhere that's 80% either way, I don't think. No, not even Keene (I checked).

Hanover was 82.2% for Obama counting the two party vote (4.00 / 1)
And don't forget Pinkham's Grant and Green's Grant, they were 100% for Obama.

No one = 0. If there's anybody there, it's an insult to that person to call them "no one".

But moving on, the populations of both Grants are listed as zero.

What Grudge? (0.00 / 1)
I just find your demeanor appalling is all. Nothing personal.

And just because you want the population of both grants to be zero, doesn't make their populations zero.
