Wherein Shea-Porter Owns Guinta on the Issues, Pt. II

by: Dean Barker

Thu Oct 14, 2010 at 19:24:57 PM EDT

Walking Scandal Frank Guinta pretends that the questions over his mystery money are a deliberate strategy to avoid discussing the issues.

Yeeaahhh... sure:

Game. Set. Match.

(Click here for Wherein Shea-Porter Demolishes Guinta on the Issues, Pt. I)

Adding: Seriously, watch this video; Facebook it, tweet it.  It's deer in the headlights territory.  What's so frustrating is knowing that if voters saw that instead of endless out of state hit job ads, Carol would win by a landslide.

Guinta Can't Answer Direct Question on Mystery Money

by: Dean Barker

Tue Oct 12, 2010 at 21:21:54 PM EDT

I was going to add this to elwood's post on Jon Greenberg's outstanding reporting, but it's so devastating I think it deserves its own space on the front page (emphases mine):
No reporter has asked Guinta if his parents are the source of his money.  We tried but didn't get far.

JG:  Did your parents gift you a great deal of money?

GUINTA:  I'm going to focus on the issues of economy, and jobs, and moving this country forward.

JG:  Did your parents gift you a great deal of money?[pause] I didn't hear an answer.

GUINTA:  I've already addressed the matter that you're trying to talk about.

JG:  And you're not answering the question yes or no.[pause]

Adding: If you can get the audio to work, you owe it to yourself to hear this exchange.  Guinta definitely sounds nervous when confronted with the question on whether the money came from his parents.

Heart attack? Sleep it off...

by: Mike Hoefer

Fri Oct 08, 2010 at 10:13:24 AM EDT

Charlie's desire to return to the bad old days was on full display on the Exchange today. While he did not suggest we trade chickens in exchange for health care he did seem to lament the fact that we no longer tell heart attack patients to take a glycerin pill and sleep it off.

What were your reactions to Charlie on The Exchange today?

How is NHPR doing in these candidate forums? As the ONLY state wide alternative to the Union Leader are they fair and balanced?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Ayotte Caught Peddling Bogus AZ Myth (Again)

by: Dean Barker

Wed Jul 07, 2010 at 21:25:22 PM EDT

Christmas in July?  Behold, actual journalism practiced today! Kelly Ayotte:
"They have a serious public safety issue in Arizona. They have the second highest kidnapping rate in the world."
Reality:
"It's a media anecdote run amok."

..."John McCain has said it. We (Bill Adair of non-partisan Politfact) first checked it when it was said at the Texas state republican convention. And this is an anecdote that seems to have originated with the Phoenix police department which doesn't have anything to back it up."

Here's the part that knocked me on the floor.   I rubbed my eyes, but it's still there:
The campaign did not respond when asked if Ayotte will continue to make her claims about Arizona and kidnapping.
And remember.  This is not the first time Kelly Ayotte peddled a bogus GOPer myth about Arizona to ratchet up her anti-immigration rhetoric.  Apparently she will leave no falsehood unused in her efforts to make this election about culture wars and not the GOP's effort to tank the economy.

Which reminds me: has anyone found out yet if she supports Judd Gregg's successful effort to strip taxpaying Americans of their jobless benefits?

Sunday Open Thread: Shameless Self-Promotion

by: Dean Barker

Sun Jan 24, 2010 at 10:35:24 AM EST

NHPR's The Exchange:
What's Next for the Democrats?
By Laura Knoy on Monday, January 25, 2010.

A roundtable of New Hampshire Democrats joins us to discuss the state of their party. Many fear recent election wins for Republicans in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia spell trouble for Democrats and if the trend continues, it could mean more losses in the midterm elections. We'll get their take how the Democratic Party is faring and what, if anything, they think should change.

Guests

   * Mary Jane Wallner, State House Majority Leader
   * Ray Buckley, chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party
   * Dean Barker, publisher of www.Bluehampshire.com

NHPR Tomorrow: Blogger Rights

by: Zandra Rice Hawkins

Mon Nov 16, 2009 at 18:10:12 PM EST

An interesting segment scheduled for NHPR's The Exchange tomorrow, IMHO:
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 - A New Challenge on the First Amendment
Free speech allows us to say what we want, but it does have its limits.  We can't, for example, yell "fire" in a crowded theater.  The media has a responsibility to print the truth and a part for everyone else to give their opinions.  A new case being heard by the New Hampshire Supreme Court brings the first amendment to 2009.  In question, whether media outlets can protect the identities of anonymous online commenters.  It's a case that with not only bring the first amendment to posting sites, blogs and citizen journalists, but also see where they fit in today's media landscape.  Today we'll look at this case and what it may mean to the future of online posting.

Follow the link for the guest line-up, program begins at 9 a.m. For background on the issue, see this piece by Josh Rogers. Tune in, call-in: 1-800-892-6477.

If PUMA, Then DOPEY, Too

by: Dean Barker

Wed Jul 09, 2008 at 08:32:33 AM EDT

If the elitist snobs at NHPR and other arugula eating MSM outlets who stole the election for Barack Obama are going to cover fringe movements like PUMA, then I demand they stop censoring the real presidential election conspiracy, encapsulated by my own group, DOPEY:

Dodd, Our President, Every Year
And I won't stop until the MY PERSONAL FAVORITE CANDIDATE gets into the White House, or else! Otherwise, it's McCain for me.

Things I Learned from John E. Sununu's NHPR Interview Today

by: Dean Barker

Tue Jan 15, 2008 at 20:54:46 PM EST

Some things I learned from John E. Sunoco's radio interview today on The Exchange:
* Voting on withdrawal from Iraq is "pointless"

* Opposing 15 billion in Big Oil subsidies is a "far left" idea.

* John E.'s afraid of Bush's big bad veto, so that's why he can't vote for a real energy bill.

* Privatizing your Social Security is still a top priority for our junior senator.

* Other legislative goals include repealing the Supra-Rich Estate Death Tax - permanently.

Thanks to the primary I (momentarily) forgot how truly radical this man is.  He's so out of touch from everyday Granite Staters it's alarming. But thanks to the calls into the show, it looks like our electorate 'aint buying what he's selling.

And I'll add this in the way of a pop psychology analysis: Sununu gets very defensive very quickly, and once again (I've seen this on display elsewhere) he cannot tolerate anyone in the room being smarter than himself.  Take note, candidates, this is his Achilles' heel.

NHPR's "Primary Remix"

by: elwood

Thu May 10, 2007 at 08:51:13 AM EDT

This is an interesting project. New Hampshire's public radio network is posting the stump speeches of each candidate in .MP3 form and inviting people to remix them.

They seem to realize that this is handing out weapons at a frat party -- they talk about "spoof" and "parody." I'm guessing that we'll see some sharper edges than those terms suggest in the resulting works.

All sorts of remixes are possible here. You could focus on remixing a single candidate -- perhaps a "7:00 News / Silent Night" treatment. Or you could mix and match a whole bunch of candidates -- for example, showing the wide range of Republican thinking on Iraq (/snark). And if Karl Rove can rap, certainly our commenters can.

It might make sense to add visuals -- if only because most listeners won't recognize (for example) Sam Brownback's voice yet, and you could provide identifying text or pictures. Plus, who could resist adding visuals of John McCain's strategic shopping excursion when he talks about the progress we are making?

Fergus on NHPR

by: elwood

Sat Mar 03, 2007 at 20:20:39 PM EST

This week -- I believe Monday -- Laura Knoy will be interviewing newly elected NH GOP Chair Fergus Cullen on The Exchange, the morning talk / call-in show at 9:00 AM.

It might be useful to pull together a list of questions that listeners might call in to Fergus. (I'm using his first name, not out of any sort of disrepect -- but because I love that first name.) We can organize our own thoughts, and Mr. Cullen -- if he reads us -- can prepare his answers.

Here's a start:

NHPR's list: 25 influential New Hampshirites

by: elwood

Wed Dec 06, 2006 at 17:35:26 PM EST

New Hampshire Public Radio is 25 years old, and they are asking their listeners for nominations for the 25 New Hampshire residents who have had the greatest influence on the state over that period.

Having recently discussed the Atlantic's national list, I pulled together a state version...
