From Cillizza's Friday Senate Line, where guess what race climbed from seventh place to the top spot:
Former governor Steve Merrill told the Fix that he would defer to Sununu but, if the senator is out, Merrill will likely take a hard look at the contest.
Interesting how with Sununu or Bass or Merrill, or even Rudman and Peterson with the now pointless Gregg replacement, and with another former Republican Governor as NHGOP chair, the tendency is to look backwards.
Just what does that say about the future of the elephants?
According to WMUR, the Republican Party, foiled in its effort to entice Mayor Guinta into running for governor, has now turned its lonely eyes to: former Governor Steve Merrill!
I always think of former Governor Merrill as Smiley Stevie, because my late father always called him that; I remember with great fondness my father watching Merrill on the news, saying, "Smiley Stevie, he is so full of BS". Back in the day, when Merrill first ran for governor, I interviewed him for Manchester Cable Television. After the show, an intern said to him, "I don't like your position on choice." Merrill said, "Listen carefully to my words - I oppose abortion unless it is for the HEALTH or safety of the mother." He was giving a wink and a nod to the intern that the health exception would be large enough to drive a truck through. And I said to myself, self, Dad is right. Merrill is full of it.
Just when we thought the NH GOP's woes couldn't get any worse, a shocker from the Union Leader. Turns out that John "Jay" Brooks, one of the four men arrested for conspiracy to commit the murder of Jack Reid of Derry, was once a Republican prospect for the Governor's office. State Republicans are in shock and disbelief:
"It can't be Jay Brooks," said [former governor Steve] Merrill. "Out of 100 people, he would have been the last person on the list that I would have ever thought would have been involved."
...State Republican Party Chairman Wayne Semprini hadn't heard of Brooks' arrest until being contacted by a reporter yesterday.
"I've known Jay for years and I'm quite surprised," said Semprini. "The Jay Brooks I know -- I'm just shocked at learning this."
