Most of our Democratic leaders haven't handled the issue of the Islamic Community Center in NY City well at all. It's important for us to think about the kind of intolerance we're seeing, and what kind of a country we want to have - especially in light of Glenn Gantry's tent revival in DC on Saturday. ~ Susan.
Crossposted at Huffington Post and PULSE.
The national conversation on the Park 51 Islamic Community Center has taken a turn for the worst. Opponents claim it's too close to the Ground Zero and is offensive to families who lost loved ones in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Others call it a breeding ground for Al Qaida terrorist networks and have protested at the proposed site. The controversy has brought out the worst in people. Fear, ignorance, prejudice, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and racism have reared their ugly heads and meaningful conversation is no where to be found. Where do people turn to put the Park 51 controversy into context?
Jack Shaheen (no relation to Jeanne or Bill Shaheen) is the author of the groundbreaking work "Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People" and "Guilty: Hollywood's Verdict on Arabs after 9/11," the winner of the 2009 Forward Magazine social sciences book of the year. He is a professor emeritus of Mass Communication at Southern Illinois University and a winner of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee's "Lifetime Achievement Award."
Shaheen has been following the recent developments on Park 51 and I caught up with him to see what he had to say.
They better not build that mosque down by Ground Zero, we're being told, not just because it's insensitive, but because we have no idea what they'll be up to down there.
I mean, where did the money come from?
Who does this Imam hang out with, anyway?
And, at a time when our Nation faces more threats than ever, why would we let these Muslim madmen situate their "terror command posts" anywhere?
Well, I don't know about all of that...but I do know a place where lots of these Islamic terrorists go to obtain the equipment and supplies they need to support their particular craft, and I decided to make a bit of an undercover visit to the spot, so that I might "observe and report" on what goes on at this specific location.
So put on your dark glasses...and let's go see what we can find out.
The Union Leader stops short of ignoring the Constitution, but still goes there, under the banner of "sensitivity":
What is so offensive is that the people behind this project know the anguish it is causing, most painfully to those who lost friends and loved ones in the attacks nine years ago, and they just don't seem to care.
Hey, UL: New Yorkers are a lot tougher - and a lot more tolerant - than you can possibly imagine. Some of them even know Muslims who aren't terrorists! I still have more than enough Flatlander in me to say that with some authority.
Stoopid, bigoted, anti-Muslim election gimmicks by wannabe presidents. Shame on the UL for following along for the ride. That is how we will lose the War on Terror.
