SOTD, or, Great Moments in UL Concern Trolling

by: Dean Barker

Sun Aug 08, 2010 at 19:09:31 PM EDT

The Union Leader stops short of ignoring the Constitution, but still goes there, under the banner of "sensitivity":
What is so offensive is that the people behind this project know the anguish it is causing, most painfully to those who lost friends and loved ones in the attacks nine years ago, and they just don't seem to care.

Hey, UL: New Yorkers are a lot tougher - and a lot more tolerant - than you can possibly imagine.  Some of them even know Muslims who aren't terrorists! I still have more than enough Flatlander in me to say that with some authority.

Stoopid, bigoted, anti-Muslim election gimmicks by wannabe presidents.  Shame on the UL for following along for the ride. That is how we will lose the War on Terror.

As a native New Yorker... (4.00 / 5)
As a native New Yorker who lost friends in the 9/11 attacks, I agree with you 100% Dean, and I am outraged by the politicization of this issue.

The issue before NYC government was NOT whether a mosque should be allowed 'near' ground zero. (In fact, a mosque has been located several blocks from the WTC site for years).  The issue was whether the proposed alterations to the building were consistent with historic commission guidelines and regulations, and whether the building fell under thsoe protections and guidelines.

If the question was  simply "can a mosque be built...'" then clearly the answer is a resounding YES.

This nation has enshrined in the First Amendment of the Constitution the right of all people to practice their religion...PERIOD. We do not ignore Constitutional Rights because we don't like "those people." Once we do that, the terrorists have indeed won, and the American way of life has gone the way of every other tinhorn dictatorship.

It is by granting that freedom for Muslims to worship in that spot that we show how great America is. There IS no other option for Constitutionally-minded, patriotic Americans.  ANd I would really appreciate it if T-Paw and Teflon Mitt and Fairbanks Sarah and Hucksterbee would keep their noses out of processes and places they nothing of...or at least shut up and learn something from Mike Bloomberg.....

Don't you just love how NYC is used outside of NY as a whipping post for all kinds of rhetorical Villains or Villainous Ideas, yet whenever 9/11 is used for political gain, suddenly all of America knows what's good for Manhattan?

is there a statute of limitations (4.00 / 1)
on the emotional manipulation of 9/11 by the far right Republibaggers?

Property rights have long had greater weight than (0.00 / 0)
personal rights because, in large measure, the privacy of property was less controversial and easier to secure that the privacy and integrity of the person.  Indeed, once upon a time, persons were classified as property to deprive them of all their human rights -- i.e. slaves were not persons because, like children and wives, they were owned by someone else.
That said, while freedom is "granted" in the sense that someone or something is freed from some bond, association with other humans is an inherent human attribute, so associating to worship is a human right with which people are endowed.
Civil rights, technically speaking, are those associated with citizenship and are, more properly speaking, a bundle of obligations.

Freedom is not a brand name. It's what gives us moral superiority. (4.00 / 2)
It's what makes us better than the terrorists, who have nothing to do with this project.

As Bill Siroty wrote in comments to this editorial (0.00 / 0)
"There is a mosque in the Pentagon! (Washington Times, 10.3.07) - why is there no outrage over this?

There should be no outrage - readers should check out Mayor Bloomberg's defense of the "ground zero" Muslim center by citing religious freedom and private property rights.

Aren't religious freedom and private property rights more important than scoring political points?"

People posting on this blog should really make an attempt to commnet on the UL's editorials.

Media enterprises solicit comments as free filler and as (0.00 / 0)
a source of an audience for targeted communications.  Collecting "live" email addresses is a big business.  Advertising rates are set on the basis of audience characteristics.  If offensive stories attract more responses from the target audience, more offensive stories will be published.  Why dangle a spider in front of Miss Muffet?  Because it makes her scream.

You don't have to use your email address (0.00 / 0)
It's optional
