Call to Serve

by: 2632

Thu Dec 06, 2007 at 15:36:48 PM EST

"Senator Obama's stirring call to public service is the strongest since John F. Kennedy's 1960 request that all Americans, especially young Americans, ask what they can do for their country."  [Ted Sorenson, Special Counsel, Adviser, and Speechwriter for President John F. Kennedy]

For some time now, I've been trying to work up an impassioned essay on how and why volunteering on the Obama campaign has meant so much to me. I've struggled to find an elegant way to explain why I've felt called to lend my time and energy to this cause. I find that as per usual, Senator Obama has articulated what I've been trying to say for so long, in far more eloquent fashion than I could ever manage. He gave a speech yesterday at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA on the "call to serve" and the importance of public service. A few of my favorite excerpts follow:

Decisions

by: 2632

(Cross-posted at Daily Kos)
So, as I spend more and more time talking to undecided voters in New Hampshire and talk to more and more my fellow Obama volunteers and supporters about what got them so devoted to the Senator, I have grown increasingly curious about people's decision making process in this election. Some supporters have followed Obama's career for years and knew long ago he was their guy. Many undecided voters are holding out as long as possible, since they know they have great access to these candidates in their state - most of those voters also have 2 or 3 key issues which they want addressed and are looking hard at the candidates specific policies. One of my fellow volunteers said she decided to support the Senator after meeting him a couple of times because her uncle has a close relationship with him. When asked, she revealed that her uncle is MA Governor Deval Patrick. I even have a good friend who would vote for Giuliani before God himself, because he grew up with him as his Mayor and truly believes he did great things for his hometown. So, to those of you who have a candidate you support (and those of you who are undecided)...what's your story?

Canvassing for Obama in New Hampshire

by: 2632

Cross-posted at Daily Kos

My alarm went off at 7 am yesterday morning. On a Sunday. I'm a single person in my late twenties, no kids - so normally on a Sunday I'm waking up around 10 am and spend the rest of the morning in my pajamas. But yesterday I had to go New Hampshire.

I've been a volunteer organizer for the Obama campaign for about a month now. I live in Boston, which provides me the unique opportunity to become deeply involved in New Hampshire's first in the nation primary. I've made a ton of phone calls and spent a lot of of time doing community outreach and convincing other Boston area Obama supporters to volunteer, but yesterday was the first chance I've had to spend a day on the ground in New Hampshire.

I've spent a lot of time in the past canvassing for causes and money, for MASSPirg and the Sierra Club. Sometimes it was rewarding, usually I just felt like a door to door salesperson. And I really thought the experience of canvassing for my candidate would be comparable to that. I was wrong.
