(Thanks for stopping by Congressman. Only 160 days until we get to vote for you to be the next Senator from the great state of New Hampshire. - promoted by Mike Hoefer)

For 43 days, thousands of barrels of oil have been spilling into the Gulf Coast. 43 days of environmental disaster because big oil companies were given a blank check on offshore drilling with little regulation and poor oversight.

Now, with the recent failure of the "top kill" strategy, there is no end in sight to the amount of oil that is spilling into the Gulf. This spill is poisoning our waters, suffocating our plants and wildlife, and jeopardizing the health of our citizens - threatening jobs, businesses and communities along the Gulf Coast.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people and communities down on the Gulf, who are dealing day and night with the devastating aftermath of the spill.

This disaster was a warning sign. When government puts the profits of Big Oil first, when politicians listen to special interests instead of the people they are supposed to represent - then we put the safety of our workers, communities and economy at risk.

Kelly Ayotte and my other Republican opponents have spent this campaign defending the interests and profits of Big Oil, from weak regulations to billion-dollar subsidies. Now, they seem to be ignoring the red flags. In the days since the spill, the only thing they've said is "keep drilling." Not one word about tougher regulations. Not one word about protecting our environment and precious natural resources. And not one word on whether they think Big Oil should pay to clean up their mess.

I believe we need to hold BP accountable for every last cent of the clean up. They need to take responsibility, take control, and fix what they broke.

I support the President's moratorium on offshore drilling. There should be no new permits for drilling until we figure out what went wrong here and how we can make sure it never, ever happens again. My Republican opponents keep chanting "drill baby drill." Even in the days directly following this disaster, they continued to push the very same careless, reckless policies that caused it.

I challenge them to forget about politics, and put the people of New Hampshire first. I challenge them to stand up, support the President's moratorium, and fight for our environment, our economy and our clean energy efforts - not corporate profits.

I will promise to you right now that as a US Senator I will never, ever vote to lift the ban on drilling off of New Hampshire's coast. Our fisheries are too vital, our tourism too essential and our natural resources too valuable to ever put them in the hands of big oil companies.

So far my GOP opponents have stopped at nothing when it comes to drilling. Will they make that same promise to the people of New Hampshire- to protect our waters no matter what oil companies whisper in their ear? Or will they continue to choose special interests instead of the people of New Hampshire.

As a US Senator, I'll always tell you where I stand. It's time for my opponents to do the same.

What are you doing right now? (0.00 / 0)
Thank you for the information, I appreciate the concern you have for our environment, and your understanding of the real cost to people of damaging that environment.

But could you tell me, with regard to the spill itself, what are you doing to ensure that the response in the Gulf is adequate? To ensure that there are enough people cleaning beaches? To ensure that there is a surplus and not a lack of boom? And to ensure that the federal government, not BP, is directing all of these resources promptly and properly?

Thank you.
