New England, Tailpipe of the Nation

by: Dean Barker

Wed Jul 07, 2010 at 07:53:26 AM EDT

It's a frustrating paradox: in northern New England, we live in the most beautiful spot in the country. But we end up being in the exhaust zone of the rest of the nation's dirty power plants.

The president New Hampshire elected by an almost ten point margin is doing something about it:

In a move that portends cleaner air in communities east of the Mississippi River, the Obama administration cracked down Tuesday on smog- and soot-forming pollution from coal-fired power plants in 31 states and the District of Columbia.

The proposed rule, which follows through on one of President Obama's campaign promises, renews an attempt by the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce pollution in areas around coal plants and in states downwind where air quality is hampered by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions.

Combined with other state and federal regulations, the rule will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from 2005 levels by 71% by 2014, the EPA said. Nitrogen oxide emissions would drop by 52%.

Adding: what does Joe Barton-endorsed Charlie Bass have to say on this?  He claims to be a clean energy leader, after all.

Florida doesn't profit from offshore drilling; they opted to protect environment and tourism (4.00 / 1)
But because Louisiana and Mississippi drill, Florida is starting to see tar balls on its beaches.

This is why we have a national government.

if Charlie has clean energy credentials (4.00 / 1)
he must have conferred them upon himself.

From 2005

One of the most egregious provisions in the proposed House energy bill, would have allowed oil companies to duck out of their responsibility for clean up in areas contaminated by gasoline additive MTBE. The additive has polluted drinking water across the nation, including NH. Some members of the House put together a deal that would relieve the oil companies of any direct responsibility for MTBE cleanup - those poor beleaguered oil companies raking in record profits right now. These representatives suggested a plan that would allow polluters to put a small percentage into a special trust fund, and the rest of the tab would be picked up by the taxpayers. NH is in the process of suing some of these oil companies, which makes it all the more surprising that NH Rep. Charles Bass was one of the supporters of the deal to let polluters off the hook, at taxpayer expense.

That's not even the half of it (0.00 / 0)
On multiple occasions, Charlie Bass voted. . . .

* For offshore oil drilling
* For subsidizing oil companies
* Against funding enforcement of environmental protection laws
* And much more. . . .

Hell, this is the guy who once referred to the Sierra Club as an "extremist" organization.  Clearly, he is no friend of the environment, even if he tries to mislead his (former) constituents to that end.
