Shorter Swett Campaign Release

by: Dean Barker

Wed Aug 04, 2010 at 17:19:17 PM EDT

Shorter Swett Campaign Release (I'll put a link up if they post it on their website): We got nothing, and the story is starting to feel stale, so: Lobbying!!1!

And the one note campaign plays on.

A friend of mine wondered why I cover this primary, as he does not see how it is possible Swett wins it.

I think he might be right; but in another sense this is the deferred primary Swett never got in 2002 when national Dems backed her pre-September and she strategically ignored a rival candidate who turned out to be right on the Bush tax cuts.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
Couldn't agree with you more, Dean.  Since Ann's quarter-century career of taking money from corporations to influence New Hampshire public policy cannot be raised on Blue Hampshire to counter hypocritical attacks on Katrina's progressive values, I will offer up a "second note" for your consideration:

Ann McLane Kuster's longtime financial support for Republican state senators in their campaigns against progressive Democratic challengers.

I don't know why the Swett campaign didn't uncover this, but Ann's record as an ATM for the State Senate GOP is publicly available for your review.

Given your harsh (and deserved) condemnation of Gov. Lynch's endorsement of Sen. Odell over Jay Phinizy in the 2008 election, I have no doubt you will join me in questioning Ann's support for far more conservative Republicans -- such as Bob Clegg, Andy Martel, and Bob Flanders.

I am shocked (0.00 / 0)
that lobbyists give to both parties.  Shocked!

Still curious. . . . (0.00 / 0)
What do you think prompted Ann to open her checkbook and write personal checks to some of the state legislature's most reactionary figures?

You noted that it's because she's a "lobbyist."  Are you implying that Ann might be trying to curry access/support for specific pieces of legislation from Republican incumbents?  Because I'm not.  I don't think that Ann would do that.

I think that she really wanted Bob Clegg, Andy Martel, and Bob Flanders to win.

You get it, even though you pretend not to get it. (0.00 / 0)
Your attacks on Kuster are character attacks based on her former job.

I don't care if we have ogres or angels in office.  I can count the number of politicians I truly admire as people on one hand.

What I do care about is that they vote the right way.

My interest is that the last time we gave the nomination keys to Katrina Swett for Congress, her position on the "death tax" was identical to John Stephen's, her position on the Iraq war was identical to Charlie Bass', her position on parental consent matched Kelly Ayotte's.

How my congresswoman will represent me matters.

No, Dean. That's not it -- not at all. (0.00 / 0)
Your attacks on Kuster are character attacks based on her former job.

John Knowles of Hudson has probably knocked on more doors than any Democratic volunteer in the state.  He and Mary Ann have fought the good fight since guys like us were in diapers.  And when he was asked to take on Bob Clegg in an uphill battle, he gladly volunteered to stand up for his party.

Quite a few Democratic lobbyists decided not to give money to his right-wing opponent.  Ann chose to do so.  And, while you take her self-interested campaign statements from the past year at face value, some of us will look at her record, too.

Katrina Swett has made mistakes, and she has acknowledged them.  But I'm pretty sure that she has never given a dime to undermine people like John Knowles.  And she never will.
