"Boy, is Barack Obama in big trouble"

by: Lucy Edwards

Fri Aug 06, 2010 at 21:41:51 PM EDT

I simply had to share this with those among us who are displeased with their elected officials who haven't fixed it all yet.

The sacrifices we are called on to make are small. Donating money until it hurts, making phone calls, going door-to-door don't amount to much in the scheme of things. The idea we have to get across is that the barbarians actually are at the gates in  the form of the modern Republican Party. We honor our predecessors for making much bigger sacrifices, often under much, much worse leadership, to hold off other barbarians. Now it's our turn
Lucy Edwards :: "Boy, is Barack Obama in big trouble"
For those who don't like the way the people they elected legislate and govern, who feel they haven't done enough, haven't moved fast enough, haven't used the bully pulpit enough, haven't somehow forced or persuaded the rest of the folks in DC to do it the way you wanted, just remember what the alternative is.  We have been watching the other side grow increasingly shrill and get further and further toward the abyss of sheer craziness or worse, violence against their fellow citizens.  I don't care how disappointed you are, get out there and make sure the Republicans don't take over Congress or the NH legislature.  If you think it is bad now, you haven't seen anything yet.

In that spirit, the ActBlue page for Lucy Edwards for State Representative merits attention.

Thank you! (4.00 / 4)
It is hard enough to run for state rep, but to listen to the chatter about how Paul Hodes didn't do that, or I don't think he is running his campaign right, or Obama is such a disappointment, from my locals, gives me shivers down my spine.  I want to scream at them, what are you doing to help the cause?  It's so easy to talk, but when it comes to running this state or this country with the sort of people we have on the other side today, interested only in power, not in our common welfare, how can you sit there and nitpick?

This is so important to remember. (3.00 / 4)
Seen from another perspective, the list of things that have not yet been done may be long, but there are additional points to make.

First, the point that often gets lost sight of when people are unhappy that their top priority has not yet been met, is that our side is far more inclusive, and allows for a far greater diversity of viewpoints than the alternative.  The things that remain undone generally remain so not because of some kind of conspiracy at the top, but because there are just not enough votes to do them.  (At least that's true of the NH House, where every bill gets a hearing and a floor vote, no matter what.  I can see other arguments if the subject is the US Senate.)

Second, and I think more important for this election cycle, focussing on what haas not been dome obscures the view of what HAS been done.  I cannot remember a president in my lifetime, who has passed so many pieces of major legislation or coped with so many diverse problems, in less than two years, than Barack Obama.

I applaud the efforts of Jeanne Shaheen, Paul Hodes and Carol Shea-Porter in the Senate an the House.  I cringe when I am told that someone is not supporting Hodes because he will not promise to single-handedly end the practice of filibuster.

And here in NH, think for a minute where we were four years ago.  When I was elected to the NH House in 2006, the minimum wage was $5.25 an hour, and we were the only state without universal public kindergarten, and rain leaked from the roof onto desks in the State House.  A list of our accomplishments since then is fodder for a separate diary--a long one.  The prospect of having them undone is indeed chilling.

I could really use (0.00 / 0)
the list of what you all have accomplished in NH to add to my blog and literature.  While I am aware of some of it, thanks to reports from Maureen Mann in The Forum, I know there is stuff I have missed.  So please, if you can, do that diary.  We need all the information we can get as we combat the attacks that are sure to come.

A fairly good list has already been posted here. (4.00 / 1)
The diary Thirty Reasons Why John Stephen is Under 30% has a good start at a list.  I wish the citations were more thorough, and there was the one typo on one item, but Pamela Walsh supplied the explanation on that one.
