Charlie Bass: Reinventing History. John Stephen: Concerned About Working People?

by: Rep. Jim Splaine

Sun Oct 03, 2010 at 10:20:00 AM EDT

(Unbelievable. - promoted by Dean Barker)

"America was doing pretty well in January of 2008."  -- Charlie Bass

That's what he said on Channel 9's WMUR CloseUp this Sunday.  We heard about his mistake a couple of days ago, but to actually hear him say it, and in the context in which he said it, was quite interesting.

Elect Charlie Bass and he'll reinvent history in 2011.

This guy is losing it.  Kind of sad.

It ranks up there with John Stephen's ignorance the other day in the debate with Governor John Lynch about the minimum wage.  A question came up about whether the minimum wage should be increased.

Stephen was under the impression it's solely a federal issue, which Lynch quickly corrected.  Obviously, the difficulties of working men and women is off Stephen's radar screen -- he doesn't even know about the minimum wage.  Anyone hanging around the State House for a while knows that the issue is discussed virtually every year.

Democrats And Lynch Increased The Mininum Wage (0.00 / 0)
And anyone hanging around the State House for a while knows that Democrats And Governor Lynch increased the minimum wage these past couple of years.

Of course, when you don't care about working men and women, you don't notice that.  You can go through your life driving your expensive car, not worrying about saving a penny or two by going to one gasoline pump instead of another, going out to eat a few times a week, not worrying about Social Security because you know you'll have plenty of money in your private retirement account, and enjoying your HDTV tonight at your warm home in a nice neighborhood.

All the while you can congratulate yourself for your inventiveness at having a business where you are able to hire others at short wage to work for you to make you richer, and/or have a good job that comes from a business or corporation that benefits from our tax policies so the rich get richer and the poor gets poorer.  The disparity between rich and poor in America is getting wider year by year.

What Charlie meant to say (4.00 / 4)
"Wealthy America was soing pretty well in January of 2008."

Indeed, folks like Charlie -- with inherited millions, no concerns about health care or higher education, and a personal antique car collection -- were doing quite well in January of 2008.  Markets were thriving on the backs of unregulated and undiscovered corruption in the housing market.  Taxes for millionaires declined dramatically after the Bush/Bass tax cuts of 2001, and the impacts of the burgeoning Bush/Bass deficits were felt by working folks (e.g., America's industrial base).  Charlie and his peers were doing extremely well in January 2008.

If Charlie returns to Washington, expect more of the same policies that drove us into the economic sewer.  Underfunding SEC regulation.  Weakening Wall Street standards.  Defunding investments in our long-term competitiveness, e.g., eliminating federal student loans and voting against teacher hiring.  One-sided "free trade" agreements that were "free" for only one side.  Ignoring health care reform and throwing the burden on to small businesses.

Charlie voted for all of the above.  He didn't get it then.  And, as Dean notes, he sure as hell doesn't get it now.  Annie Kuster does.

My mistake (4.00 / 3)
In the last paragraph, I meant to credit Jim rather than Dean.  My apologies.

Elephants Forget (4.00 / 1)
Let's not limit this to Charlie Bass.  There must be some kind of virus going around that causes Republicans to forget recent history.

Ah 2008, when the country was fighting two unnecessary wars and economic disaster was upon us.  Apparently the elephant pack wants to go back to those "good" old days.  Well us donkeys have enough common sense to remember the past and would rather go back to the good old days of the Clinton Administration when we were at peace and had a budget surplus.  Thank God that donkeys always remember.

Now the independents need to be reminded of what happened the last time the Republicans controlled Congress.
