Rep. Baldasaro Applauds Booing of Gay Soldier

by: William Tucker

Tue Oct 04, 2011 at 07:03:41 AM EDT

During the last Republican presidential debate, the audience booed a gay soldier serving in Iraq who asked a question about gays serving in the military. None of the candidates on stage defended him at the time, but after a firestorm of criticism, several candidates subsequently expressed their regret at not speaking up in his defense.

Not so for New Hampshire state Rep. Al Baldasaro (R-Londonderry) who says he was "disgusted" by the soldier and thought the audience reaction was "great."

Discussing the audience’s boos, Baldasaro said the real issue was the fact that Hill divulged his sexual orientation in the first place. “I was so disgusted over that gay marine* coming out,” Baldasaro said, because now Hill’s fellow soldiers will “start getting away from him” and “start ignoring him.” Baldasaro even speculated that because Hill came out of the closet, other soldiers might not protect him when “the shit hits the fan” in battle.
KEYES: Did you have an issue with the audience reaction?

BALDASARO: Oh no, I thought the audience, when they booed the marine, I thought it was great.
You can listen to his comments below the fold.

And here we thought NEANDERTHALS were extinct ! (4.00 / 3)

What an embarrassment to this state. (4.00 / 7)

Honored (0.00 / 0)
That thug Baldasaro came very close to punching me, at the Welcome Bill O'Brien event in Portsmouth.

And watch how you insult those poor innocent Neanderthals, tchair.

No'm Sayn?

American Values (4.00 / 3)
It is sad to hear that anyone would hate -- or boo -- a fellow American who is fighting to protect our country and our values just because he is honest about who he is.

American values of liberty and justice for all -- that's a pledge most of us are proud to say -- call for a repudiation of those who don't believe in liberty and justice for ALL.  Those of us who love America should feel ashamed of such vulgar thoughts.

Authority-- (4.00 / 2)
When authority stands silent in the face of abuse, it becomes complicit.

Al "Bizzaro" (4.00 / 2)
Never fails to entertain.

What an embarassment to our State!!!!!!Who elects this moron???

"Just because you do not take an interest in politics, doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you" - Pericles, 430 BCE

Baldasaro and Family Values (4.00 / 3)

Al B refers to the Gay Marine's fellow soldiers as "brothers".

Then explains how they'll abandon the Gay Marine in combat. They won't have his back.

And that sums up right wing family values to a "t."

Thanks Al. Now we know for sure.

Talk about treason and betrayal.

Baldasaro (4.00 / 9)
is the Chairman of the State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs Committee.

He should resign. He has no business being on a committee charged with helping veterans in our state.

Hate Groups (4.00 / 1)
Al Baldasaro is just a typical republic party wingnut.  Here's another story about how hate groups work:

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans have agreed to a new contract to pay a private law firm up to $1.5 million to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, which bans same-sex marriage on the federal level.

So is Rick Perry going to stand by his hateful disrespecting supporter? (4.00 / 2)

I'd say the over/under on his handlers deciding to stop the pain is about two days.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

Shira's the only one doing the legwork locally on this: (4.00 / 3)
Baldasaro said he has not heard from the Perry campaign about his remark. A call to the Perry campaign was not immediately returned. But Perry surrogate Matt Gaetz, a Florida state representative, who talked to reporters after the Florida debate, called the booing "unfortunate" and "disrespectful," according to Talking Points Memo.

Drunk with Prejudice (4.00 / 2)
As a veteran it was disappointing hearing the comments made by Representative Baldasaro.

What is happening in his mind is anyone's guess.  Baldasaro is not right for NH or America and should resign immediately.

The military I served in years ago we took care of all of our fellow service members. We had the back of anyone wearing the same uniform, regardless of background.
For Baldasaro to insult the professionalism of the military and to call a Soldier in harms way disgusting is un-American and wrong.

he is not all bad, but... (0.00 / 0)
He is not all bad: I have seen his good side many times during (and even before) our service together as state reps.  The people of his community elected them, he should keep serving.  Every so often, he does say something ridiculous, but he is not the only state rep who has been known to say dumb things on occasion.  (I myself have been know to say dumb things, to name just one example.)

But, I do question whether he should continue to be the chair of the State-Federal & Veterans Affairs committee.  This controversy does make it hard for him to be taken seriously as the chair of this committee.  O'Brien has apparently not asked him to step down from his chairmanship, but he could step down anyway.

Ironically, the member of that committee with the most seniority and the most relevant experience after Baldasaro is Lee Quandt (whose smiling face can be seen in the video embed in the original post, just over Al's left shoulder.).

once again (4.00 / 1)
Rep.  Horrigan defends the indefensible. I heard Baldasaro testify before a committee last year that the state of NH sells babies to gay couples. Baldasaro is indeed THAT bad - and worse.

going all baldasaro on us (0.00 / 0)
I was at that hearing: I actually snuck out and had lunch just as he was about to go on--- I could tell he was about to go all "Baldasaro" on us.
