Marchand for Senate?

by: Dean Barker

Fri Nov 24, 2006 at 12:00:00 PM EST

Does Portsmouth's young mayor have a shot?  Dem party chair Kathy Sullivan thinks so:

"If Steve decided to run, he'd be an excellent candidate," said N.H. Democratic Party Chairwoman Kathy Sullivan. "He's a very smart, very personable and he's a very hard worker, and I think he'd be a great candidate."

Former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, who lost to Sununu in 2002, recently told the Boston Globe she has not ruled out a rematch against Sununu. The article also mentions state Sens. Maggie Hassan, Joe Foster and Peter Burling as potential candidates, as well as Marchand.

(They forgot the Blue Hampshire dark horse favorite, Dayton Duncan, but whatever...follow me below the fold for the Mayor's dilemma.)

Dean Barker :: Marchand for Senate?
How does Marchand feel about the attention?

"Right now my job is to be the best mayor I can be," said Marchand. "Certainly at this moment, I'm not looking at 2007, never mind 2008. "¦ When the time comes, my wife and I will make a decision about what the best path is."

And that, my friends, is where is gets interesting:

Marchand's wife, Sandi Hennequin, who is secretary of the Portsmouth Republican City Committee, said she would be somewhat conflicted because she thinks Sununu is doing well. Still, she said she's proud her husband is spoken of in such high regard.

Looks like we a Granite state version of Carville and Matalin here.  I have to be honest: while there are plenty of right-wingers in my family, I can't imagine being married to a Republican during these Bush years.  Suum cuique, and all that, but I really don't know how I wouldn't get kicked out of the house.

But maybe it's a non-issue, and I'm just overreacting.  What do you all think?  And if we have any readers here from the Portsmouth area, I'd love to hear your take on Marchand's stewardship of that fine city.

Poll
Can a Democratic Senate Candidate Be Married to a Republican Who Thinks Sununu is Doing a Good Job?
Of course; nothing to see here.
Don't know.
It is a little weird.
No way. We must define the differences.

Mayor Marchand (0.00 / 0)
Good guy, but too young and inexperienced to beat John Sununu. I don't think he has the presence at this point in his career to run for US Senate.

I think it would be a big mistake. Wait a couple of years and he should run for the House (if CSP is defeated) or US Senate.

scratch my last post (0.00 / 0)
I actually think he would make a terrific gubernatorial candidate after Governor Lynch decides to hang it up. He's a real budget hawk and would fit the state well.

Sitting Mayor? (4.00 / 1)
The was a former Mayor of Laconia, J. Oliver Huot, who won the 1st CD in the 1964 landslide, then lost in 1966. Other than that I'm not aware of any mayors leveraging their position for a districtwide or statewide office.

The pundits, IMHO, are all wet. It's historically ignorant to look for candidates among current officeholders.

If anyone gets Dayton to DL Dec 1st... (4.00 / 1)
...I'll buy him a beer...

There's a chance I can manage that (4.00 / 2)
Since 2 regulars work for him.

And the "Draft Dayton" movement begins! (0.00 / 0)
(hey, it worked for Jim Webb, and part-way for Lamont...)

I'd rather not go into how I am familiar with Dayton in front of the world, but suffice it to say that I've made him known of this growing interest in his candidacy.  I'm looking forward to hearing his response to the mini-blog-hoopla.

I think it's remarkable (0.00 / 0)
That they said all the same names we have been talking about.

I guess Blue Hampshire is with it.

I used to believe (4.00 / 1)
that political activists on opposite sides were more alike than a political activist and a non-participant.

But since the Republican Party evolved into a crime syndicate I no longer hold that view.

Good point. (0.00 / 0)
Under normal circumstances I would'nt see a problem, but considering what's happened to the GOP I voted "It's a little weird" in my own poll.
