Does Portsmouth's young mayor have a shot? Dem party chair Kathy Sullivan thinks so:
"If Steve decided to run, he'd be an excellent candidate," said N.H. Democratic Party Chairwoman Kathy Sullivan. "He's a very smart, very personable and he's a very hard worker, and I think he'd be a great candidate."
Former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, who lost to Sununu in 2002, recently told the Boston Globe she has not ruled out a rematch against Sununu. The article also mentions state Sens. Maggie Hassan, Joe Foster and Peter Burling as potential candidates, as well as Marchand.
(They forgot the Blue Hampshire dark horse favorite, Dayton Duncan, but whatever...follow me below the fold for the Mayor's dilemma.)
"Right now my job is to be the best mayor I can be," said Marchand. "Certainly at this moment, I'm not looking at 2007, never mind 2008. "¦ When the time comes, my wife and I will make a decision about what the best path is."
And that, my friends, is where is gets interesting:
Marchand's wife, Sandi Hennequin, who is secretary of the Portsmouth Republican City Committee, said she would be somewhat conflicted because she thinks Sununu is doing well. Still, she said she's proud her husband is spoken of in such high regard.
Looks like we a Granite state version of Carville and Matalin here. I have to be honest: while there are plenty of right-wingers in my family, I can't imagine being married to a Republican during these Bush years. Suum cuique, and all that, but I really don't know how I wouldn't get kicked out of the house.
But maybe it's a non-issue, and I'm just overreacting. What do you all think? And if we have any readers here from the Portsmouth area, I'd love to hear your take on Marchand's stewardship of that fine city.

Can a Democratic Senate Candidate Be Married to a Republican Who Thinks Sununu is Doing a Good Job?
