Papa John Working Hard for Bush League Bradley

by: Dean Barker

Wed Apr 15, 2009 at 20:08:01 PM EDT

(Bumped for the update, which shouldn't have surprised me, but did. - promoted by Dean Barker)

The Friday before the big special election, and the head of the NHGOP is working overtime to... cultivate his celebrity out of state:
PROVIDENCE, RI --The state Republican Party released a bulletin this afternoon asking people to clear Friday, April 17, for a special event with a special guest.

Former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu, the father of the recently-ousted U.S. senator with the same name, will attend the Rhode Island GOP's spring fling at the Providence Biltmore. The party will offer a photo reception from 6 to 7 p.m. and a general reception from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ooh - a photo reception!

And if that doesn't appeal to you, there's always: contacting the Bud Martin campaign to see what you can do to GOTV.

Speaking of Sununu the Elder, check out James Pindell's latest column. It's an interesting read, and you will definitely not want to miss the accompanying graphic.

UPDATE: This is rich.  A BH reader tells me that the chair of the RI GOP is none other than Marc Pappas, who, though never charged, appears to have been involved in the phonejamming saga. According to the FBI report,

Pappas gave McGee the Manchester Fireman's Union number to add to his list of numbers to call on election day.

Just guessing - (4.00 / 2)
The RIGOP's press release didn't say "recently-ousted US Senator with the same name."

Projo being sassy, I guess.

Possibles Titles for Sununu's Speech (4.00 / 4)
5. "Whoring for the Government of Azerbaijan -- an Art, Not a Science"

4. "I Just Ate All the Pizza in Providence!"

3. "My Son and I are Smarter Than You"

2. "My New Hampshire Republican Empire and Me"

1. "Helicopterin' the Night Away!"

Voting for 3a. (4.00 / 2)
3a.  "My son and I are smarter than you and everyone else at this climate change denialist conference."

A Question About Sununu (0.00 / 0)
I have a question about John Dad Sununu, and I wonder if anyone has an answer.

This is a serious question that I've thought about only a little, and I'm sure others have more thoroughly studied the matter so may have a good answer.

Here goes:

WHY did New Hampshire Republicans choose John Dad Sununu as their Party Chair?

Fergus! (0.00 / 0)
...was a coward.  Can't say I blame him, though.

One flatlander's theory (4.00 / 1)
Money. The party is in dire straits, so they're turning to an "elder statesman" with a (somewhat) national name in the hope that he can raise some serious cash.

I would flip the question. Party chair is a truly thankless job (am I right?). So what did he shake them down for? He's not known for his political largesse.

Oh, it's thankful (0.00 / 0)
if you can use it to engineer another nomination for Junior.

You think? (0.00 / 0)
That type of conflict should have made him ineligible.

But I suppose there was no one to stop him.

I think Jim's right (4.00 / 2)
The NHGOP picked Sununu because they needed a big name to raise money, and he's the last one on the bench.  (Steve Merrill is, not surprisingly, whoring for ultraconservative corporations seeking to avoid their legal obligations:  http://www.binghamconsulting.c...

Sununu picked the NHGOP because he likes attention and adulation, and you can only get so much of that selling out to repressive governments.  This is not a man who avoids the limelight.

[ Parent ]
He's the Howard Dean of the NH GOP (4.00 / 2)
Party Chair really isn't a job that the top luminaries who have held or even run for the top offices usually seek. (Jeb Bradley hadn't fallen far enough yet to seek the job.)

When they do they can sort of steal the oxygen from other candidates. The party regulars are a bit starstruck.
