Joe Sestak May Challenge Specter

by: JimC

Tue May 05, 2009 at 10:53:59 AM EDT

I say "may" dutifully, because it seems to be done.

Talking Points Memo has the story:

Sestak has become more and more forthright in recent days about his intent to challenge Specter for the 2010 Pennsylvania Senate nomination if Specter doesn't move left. Before Specter got in the race, Sestak said he had no intention of attempting a bid for the Senate. After Specter made his switch that all changed. First Sestak criticized Specter for lacking principles. Then said he'd wait to see what Specter stands for before making any decisions. Then Friday he said he was "thinking about getting in" to the race. Now he tells Greg "[i]f [Specter] doesn't demonstrate that he has shifted his position on a number of issues, I would not hesitate at all to get in."

You go, Joe. I hope Andy Stern isn't using you to get back at Specter.

- A Hillary supporter during the primary, but supported Obama in the general.

- Named most productive freshman by Steny Hoyer, according to Wiki

Specter rooting for Coleman (4.00 / 1)
In an interview with the New York Times, Specter stated in no uncertain terms that he wants Norm Coleman to win the disputed Minnesota Senate race: "There's still time for the Minnesota courts to do justice and declare Norm Coleman the winner."

So what exactly are the Dems getting out of this whole deal?

not enough, Jim (4.00 / 1)
I suspect this will be another Lieberman sweetheart deal, the kind that comes back to shiv the Democrats  during the next election.

Sadness (4.00 / 2)
I was firmly in the 'give him a chance to demonstrate a change in behavior' camp at first, when there was talk of a primary challenge to him before he'd taken a single vote. Now he's voted and made statements, and that window where I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt is just about closed. There's still a sliver left where maybe if he turns himself around on EFCA, supports Obama's SCOTUS pick (whoever that might turn out to be), and helps break a Republican filibuster on health care reform. But I don't think any of those are likely, and I'm ready to see someone get in the race to challenge Specter.

I'm not convinced yet that Sestak is the answer, but he's certainly the best currently making any noise about it. He's already more conservative than his district seems to merit (and I'll let Nate Silver's analysis provide the argument there, as I'm not an expert on Sestak), so I could easily see someone else emerging as a more stoutly Democratic candidate. But if Sestak wins the primary, or if it comes down to Sestak against Specter, you can bet I'd be on Sestak's side.

IT for John Lynch '04 and NHDP '08 - I'm liking my track record so far!

Well Said, RealNRH (4.00 / 2)
I'm all for welcoming Specter into the party, and I don't expect to agree with him on every issue.  But he doesn't represent a red state, and his switch was -- by his own admission -- a matter of political convenience.  And his electoral strength now appears to be well overstated.

It is not only in our best interest for Specter to be a loyal Democrat -- it's in his as well.  Let's give him a chance, but we should remember that the leverage is all on our side:  If we can use the prospect of another Democrat to get him to vote the right way, then we should damn well do it.

Potential Sestak slogan (4.00 / 1)
"I am a loyal Democrat."
