NH-Sen: 20 Questions

by: Dean Barker

Wed Aug 12, 2009 at 08:10:19 AM EDT

How dare Kathy Sullivan want to know the positions of someone who could be the next US senator from New Hampshire?
I hope Ayotte and Lamontagne will start talking soon, in detail, about what issues matter to them, and what it is that is prompting them to run. People should want to serve in the U.S. Senate because they can make a difference on substantive policy issues, not because it seems like a nifty career move...

1. Do you believe American troops should be withdrawn from Afghanistan?

2. Should the United States recognize Cuba?

3. Should Roe v. Wade be overturned?

4. Name two federal agencies, departments or programs you would eliminate.

5. Do you believe global warming is a serious problem, or do you, like state Republican Party Chairman John H. Sununu, believe it is based on junk science?

6. Would you have voted to end the F-22 fighter program?

7. Would you have voted with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to oppose the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act?

8. Would you vote to end the "don't ask, don't tell" policy and allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military?

9. Would you have voted to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court? (Lamontagne already has said he would not have voted for her.)

10. Did George H.W. Bush make a mistake when he appointed David Souter to the Supreme Court?

11. Should the federal government continue to engage in stimulus spending in an effort to lower unemployment?

12. If elected, what is the first bill you would want to introduce?

13. Do you believe that Barack Obama was born in the United States?

14. Do you believe that background checks should be required before gun purchases?

15. Should U.S. senators be subject to term limits?

16. Do you support private school vouchers?

17. Would you vote to amend the Defense of Marriage Act to permit same-sex married couples to have the same federal tax treatment as other married couples?

18. Do you support federal legislation that gives states the option to adopt medical marijuana programs?

19. Do you agree with state Sen. Peter Bragdon and Republican Party Chairman John Sununu that the proposed use of the surplus from the JUA to help balance New Hampshire's budget was an attempted theft?

20. Did you vote for John Lynch or Joe Kenney in the 2008 gubernatorial election?

But read the whole thing.  It brilliantly cuts through the stealth candidate nonsense to bring us to some common sense about what we should expect from candidates, especially ones being courted by McConnell and Cornyn in DC fundraisers.

And question #10 is my favorite, for so many intersecting reasons I'm not sure I can even articulate why.

#19 is a sore point (0.00 / 0)
Ayotte may have trouble with #19.

19. Do you agree with state Sen. Peter Bragdon and Republican Party Chairman John Sununu that the proposed use of the surplus from the JUA to help balance New Hampshire's budget was an attempted theft?

Regardless of how the JUA court case turns out and regardless of what happens with the state budget, the Republicans are going to be complaining about the JUA funds transfer.  And Ayotte was Lynch's Attorney General at the time.

DeRosa's "Loser" video does not mention Ayotte (0.00 / 0)
Tom DeRosa over at our opposite color web site put an anti-Lynch video up, all about the JUA thing.  He does not mention the fact that Ayotte was the AG at the time:

(I seriously doubt he paid for the rights to use 56 seconds of the Beatles music.)

the video itself, which may not stay up for long: (4.00 / 1)

It is ironic that the NH GOP thinks it's such a disgrace to be a loser, given their many defeats over the past several years.

Um, Mr Sununu? (0.00 / 0)
Is this meant to be subtle?

She was a girl in a million, my friend.
I should have known she would win in the end.

It isn't.

There's a story (4.00 / 1)
in the Concord Monitor about Ayotte's teevee-less roll-out in Wolfeboro. Bad timing when you're competing with the POTUS, but maybe they wanted it that way.

She's strictly law and order:

"One of the important ways we're going to keep our nation safe is by vigilantly protecting the individual right to bear arms so that we can protect ourselves," Ayotte said.

When asked by the Monitor, Ayotte said she is pro-life. She later clarified that she would support abortion in limited cases, such as rape, incest or medical emergency. Ayotte said she is against same-sex marriage and believes marriage is between a man and a woman.

Ayotte criticized the federal stimulus plan even though she helped the state set up the cold case file using stimulus money.

It seems she is a rather bland re-incarnation of the Rs who went before.

The Slaughter of Children (4.00 / 1)
"One of the important ways we're going to keep our nation safe is by vigilantly protecting the individual right to bear arms so that we can protect ourselves," Ayotte said.

The CDC disagrees with you, Ms. Ayotte.

The rate for firearm-related deaths among children in the United States (1.66) was 2.7-fold greater than that in the country with the next highest rate (Finland, 0.62)

well actually (0.00 / 0)
"Ayotte criticized the federal stimulus plan even though she helped the state set up the cold case file using stimulus money."

In all fairness to Ayotte, the cold case unit was originally going to be funded primarily out of regular dollars.  The stimulus idea came up after the bill was going to be killed on the premise that this was great idea which we couldn't afford.

On the other hand, it is interesting that the stimulus czar, Bud Fitch, was and still is the Deputy AG.  He is doing a fine job and is a nonpartisan career public servant who has served under AGs and governors from both parties.  But, if the Ayotte was so adamantly opposed to the stimulus, why did she willingly go along with assigning her top aide to the stimulus czarship?

What's your point? (4.00 / 1)
That's true of most state stimulus dollars: the states would have funded them if they had the money.

[ Parent ]
Fairness? (0.00 / 0)
This is what she said previously:

While Attorney General, Ayotte made strong endorsements of President Obama's Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  She told the press that a stimulus bill was necessary to stem a rise in crime during the economic downturn, saying: "in times of economic uncertainty and with the potential for increasing crime, we need to continue to support these programs."

http://www.nhpoliticalreport.c...

She encouraged county, local and non-profits to apply for federal stimulus grants, she did not just look for money for the cold case squad.  She wasn't worried about deficit spending then. As for the cold case squad, if she really felt the way she says she feels about the stimulus funding, she would have said, no, we'll just have to go without this program.  Elwood is right on this.

scorecard (4.00 / 3)
So, we now have some answers to some questions (with some reading between the lines):

3. Roe v. Wade should be overturned
4. Well, I want to look moderate, but I don't want to annoy John Sununu, so I'll agree that global warming is "real", and maybe human activity  contributes, but let's not anything about it.
9. I really don't agree with her on anything, but Judd Gregg voted for her.
11. No, even though I worked really hard to get stimulus money before, now that I am running in a Republican primary I have to flipflop.
17. No - why should gay people have the same rights as me?

oops (4.00 / 2)
#4 should have said "lets not do anything about it".

New Hampshire is now a marriage equality state. (4.00 / 1)
That means that to support the Defense of Marriage Act is to support the federal government abdicating its and other states' Constitutional obligations to respect New Hampshire law.
