Bash Redux

by: Mike Hoefer

Mon Aug 24, 2009 at 21:10:08 PM EDT

(I'm sure Dean will let me know if I'm using the term correctly)

Markos and Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter at the Bash

A great gathering this afternoon/evening in Concord. THE political event of the week (summer?) $7.75 a plate are you kidding me?

Great to see everyone, and big thanks to the musical entertainment and Beth, JohnnyBB and Jack for organizing.

Please use this diary to post your photos, videos, thoughts and observations.

P.S. We know we've made it when our events garner protesters.

Adding (Dean): Wow - don't know where to begin, but:

* Yes, "redux" is good here.
* Thanks to everyone who helped make the bash such a success: Jon, Jack, Beth, Hermanos, and the band.
* Thanks to our special guests for coming: John DeJoie, Ann Kuster, Paul Hodes, and Carol Shea-Porter.
* Great finally to meet Markos (and family), who is as magnanimous and laid back as everyone said he is. Those kids are cute.
* Umm... I think we'll need a bigger space next time.  That was crowded (in a good way).
* Protesters?  Seriously? And I confess I really don't get the Obama-Joker image.  Whatever message that's supposed to convey, it's not working for those of us who don't spend time at Batman movies.
* I think my favorite part of every bash, and this was no exception, is meeting in person lurkers who enjoy reading BH but whom I've never met.

Thanks to all of you who came and are a part of the BH community.

Ain't had this much fun (4.00 / 3)
since the hogs et my kid brother...

Great to see lots of folks there, sorry I didn't get to visit with more, but moving around the room was a challenge.

Cheers!

Did Markos say anything interesting? (0.00 / 0)

he declined to speak at the Bash (4.00 / 1)
he was involved with his wife and kids mostly...looking to hear from those who made the book signing...

Probably (4.00 / 3)
I didn't talk to him. I did spend about a half hour keeping Elisa company while kos was doing his thing at Gibson's.

She was very nice. We talked about Massachusetts tax refugees moving into NH, amongst other things. She was raised in Londonderry and knew very well the truth behind the zombie narratives we battle here on BH.

She wrote a blog about her visit to NH.

www.KusterforCongress.com

[ Parent ]
When we were talking, (4.00 / 5)
he said he wants NH to become a solidly blue state, like the rest of the NE so the GOP on the national level gives up on it.

Right now we still are considered a "swing state," the last in the region.

That is why 2010 is so important here. We have got to retain or increase all our majorities at the state and federal levels. Hodes has to win, CD-02 has to stay blue. The majorities in the State House have to be maintained and so does the corner office.

We can't let anything slide.

[ Parent ]
Good to see everyone, great turnout (4.00 / 3)
Can you believe the protesters are comparing Obama to Heath Ledger?

Thanks so much to Bruce at Hermanos for letting us get in at 3 to set up...thanks again to Grey Mike and his mellifluous tones,to Reincarnate for laying down the blues, and to Mary Fagan who's voice and sensibility really seems to fit the ethos.

they were all afraid to stand next to me (0.00 / 0)
Mary was afraid I would hit her in the head with my guitar because I was jumping around at rehearsal...Mike was also nervous, but I was far enough to the LEFT that everyone emerged unscathed.

If the kids can't bop to it, it's bombsville.

Thanks to Mr. Hodes (4.00 / 2)
I was one of the people who was not let in because I had an anti-Hodes sign with me. I must say, althought I am still upset that he isn't holding town halls but is willing to go to events with left-wing bloggers, he handled his entrance very well. He shook hands with the protesters and answered some questions on his way in, and only left after one woman went over-the-top, which was understandable. But the fact that he came over and chatted with us showed a lot of class... I wish Shea-Porter had extended the same courtesy, but at least she is having town halls!

sorry but this wasn't a Town Hall (4.00 / 2)
it was a private affair, and we weren't going to let people be rude to our guests. If you were the guy I threw out because you had hidden a poster in your back pocket, I hope you understand. Had you wished to attend and be civil that would have been cool, but your intent was to disrupt.
Now that I have your attention, what's your plan........... for anything ?

If the kids can't bop to it, it's bombsville.

[ Parent ]
I'm not sure what you mean about a plan... (4.00 / 1)
I wasn't hiding it, sir, although it may have looked that way. As I told you, I wasn't there to debate healthcare. My problem is that Mr. Hodes is planning to go back to Washington without holding any town halls on healthcare, but is still going to events with just those who agree with him.

And if I wanted to be secretive, I wouldn't have worn my "Don't blame me..." shirt, and I wouldn't have had that sign sticking out of my pocket, and I wouldn't have given you my name as an RSVP. I offered to put my sign back in my car, remain quiet during whatever festivities would go on, and would ask Mr. Hodes a few questions at the proper time.

I do understand why you threw me out, but I think you misunderstood my intent. I'm much more reasonable than you would make me out to be, and simply wanted to ask my Congressman a few questions. He was kind enough to stop by, and I did get to ask him one on his way in, which I respected very much.

And what do you mean by my plan?

[ Parent ]
One of the casualties of the yelling and screaming that has gone on (4.00 / 1)

is that people like you don't get a chance to address your elected representatives. I'm glad that in this case, you ultimately did get to speak with Cong. Hodes and I am sorry that the woman who went  'over the top' (as you describe it)  earlier ended conversations.

We all lose a lot when we only talk to those with whom we already agree, and that goes for members of congress and citizens of any beliefs.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

[ Parent ]
Yes (0.00 / 0)
I wish I could have had the chance to get my questions answered though. I still really think he needs to have a healthcare town hall before he heads back to vote on this bill though.

[ Parent ]
Why dont you post your questions here? (4.00 / 4)

You'll probably get more answers than you need! :)

Who knows, the Congressman may provide some of the answers and anyway we can have a reasonable discussion on a tough subject.

Health care is a complicated subject-- and a scary one for all of us except the mega-wealthy. The only way to get through the noise is to talk.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

[ Parent ]
It's nowhere near the value of questioning our Reps, but we can surely talk (4.00 / 2)
I'm 17-years-old, and this spending is just scaring the living hell out of me. The stimulus funds and the bail-outs and all of this spending is just piling up SO much, and it seems it's going to be my generation paying for it, won't it? I want to know when the spending stops and the paying starts.

The other question is where is the power to take over insurance guaranteed in the constitution?

I know a lot of people don't like Lieberman, but I happen to be a big fan of him. I think he is right to say you can't ram it all through at once. Realistically, even if you want universal care, little by little would be a more sound way to get this through.

[ Parent ]
The war has been bleeding (4.00 / 2)
this country dry since W and Cheney began it. Why are you concerned about spending on human needs, such as health care but not concerned about war spending?

Also, when the Constitution was written, health care consisted of barber-surgeons, bleeding and leeches. Look at the old cemeteries. Lots of dead children, the life expectancy was maybe 40, if. They couldn't spell out every single thing or foresee every eventuality when the wrote the Constitution. We're not wearing wigs, riding in horse and buggies, either.

Lieberman is a big hawk.He can't care about cost. He is a hypocrite.

[ Parent ]
The W argument does not work (4.00 / 1)
I keep hearing the excuse from people saying "Bush started this spending mess." That's right, he did, and I hate him for it. But why keep it going? Also, I am just as concerned about war spending. This whole spending spree is going to hurt my generation. Obama keeps saying "we can't keep living beyond our means" but that is EXACTLY what our government is doing.

I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you on the constitution, because the nature of both of our comments makes it clear we probably won't come to an agreement

[ Parent ]
We will have to agree to (0.00 / 0)
disagree. Hopefully you continue your education and keep an open mind.

[ Parent ]
Disagree with which part do you disagree? (4.00 / 2)
And I will continue to have an open mind, that's why I'm on this site discussing issues with people who I generally would disagree with.

[ Parent ]
Sure it does (4.00 / 1)
It's a question of priorities. To effect a long-term shift in priorities, we will take some short-term pain. A lot of that pain is Bush's fault. It's not an "excuse" to say that.

[ Parent ]
but when does it stop? (0.00 / 0)
My point is, when does the spending stop? When is that point where we start eliminating the deficit and making sound financial decisions in Washington? Obama is increasing troop levels and continuing the wars and spending MORE than Bush did.

[ Parent ]
I don't know (0.00 / 0)
This I do know: Democratic administrations are far more fiscally responsible than GOP administrations.

[ Parent ]
How can you say that (4.00 / 1)
when Obama is running up the deficit and piling up debt more in the first six months than Bush did over eight years?!

Bush was bad.

Obama was work.

I want REAL change.

But I have to go apply for jobs. I am glad I got to have a reasonable discussion with you guys, even though we disagree. God bless.

[ Parent ]
Just not true (0.00 / 0)
There has been a spike in spending due to the stimulus, which by the way is helping in your job search.

[ Parent ]
What? (0.00 / 0)
I have only seen that the rate of unemployment is slowing, which means there's still net job loss, not job creation.

The health care system is (4.00 / 3)
a festering sore on our economy. Just the cost of premiums has been doubling every decade and will continue to do so.

Private insurers have not been willing or able to rein them in. Our economy cannot sustain it and will have another collapse. It must be fixed and the government, which is you, me and all other citizens, has to be the driving force of the solution.

Central Europe has had universal health care supported by the government since the 19th century. It was implemented in Germany by Otto von Bismark, a conservative politician. Not a socialist. A realist.

[ Parent ]
You are right to be concerned about the cost of health care. (4.00 / 3)

We (and more to the point, you and your generation) cant afford to let this opportunity for change slip by--if we dont do something to change direction, it will bankrupt the country. It already makes our cars and other products non-competive and the costs of health care are rising  far faster than income. I think I read that 70% of the bankruptcies caused by health costs are from people who had our presently inadequate policies that provide no protection when it is needed most.

What Obama is trying to do is to fundamentally change the system in a  manner that pays in large part for itself through savings. Some of  the savings will come from a system in which a government option will force cause health care providers to reduce costs-- just as Medicare, the VA system and the federal employees health care do now, by the power of bulk purchasing. The difference is that this will be available to the 60% of us that cant presently get health care from one of the systems listed above.

Right now we pay far more as a country for health care than any other industrialized nation with significantly worse results. The reason  is that we have a balkanized delivery system with no incentive for cost control. There are reasons why other countries pay less and get more.

Another portion of the costs will be paid for by returning the tax rates on the rich to where they were before Bush used a reconciliation process to cut the taxes of the rich.

There is more to the answer to your question--but I have a work commitment, so maybe some other BHers can take the baton.

As for the power part, the short answer is the Commerce Clause.

But a great question !

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

Thanks (4.00 / 1)

If you're concerned about young economic issues... (4.00 / 3)
I'd encourage you to check out this conference, which is all about the many reasons why our generation is likely to be the first generation in a century to not be better off than our parents. I'm upset at the obscene spending that has led to our deficit, most of which occurred under Bush. But you're right to say that Obama certainly hasn't stopped the spending, and plenty of Democrats in Congress voted to authorize the spending for these wars and the insanely bloated defense budget.

But, when it comes to health care, our lack of funding is the problem. Young people make up the largest group of the uninsured, and it isn't because we think we're invincible--it's because we can't afford it or it isn't offered at our jobs. A public option will greatly help the 18 million uninsured young adults. And believe me, (this is based on assumption), when you're out of school and not eligible for your parents' health care programs, and you can't find a "good" job with benefits, you'll be eager to learn more about a public option. The thought of being uninsured is terrifying, and it's too true for too many Americans.

Good Meeting Everyone (4.00 / 12)
Dean,Beth, Jack, Jon, et al., fantastic event you folks put together. You have set the bar by which future events will be judged.

It was great to see everyone tonight at the Bash and finally put names (psuedonyms) with the faces. Looking forward to having an opportunity to speak with, and listen to, you over the next year.

Thanks again for the invitation and an opportunity to speak to you this evening.

Mary had never met Mike either though Reincarnate and I have played with her in a jam setting, or by the lake for fun...we rehearsed for an hour on my back porch yesterday afternoon. It is a privilege to be able have musicians around who would do this gig for the love of, well, democracy. And they rock.

Check out Mary Fagan at the Green Martini in Concord this Saturday

31st  Mary Fagan  9 - 12

I can't tell you how much I love these things, or how bittersweet they are, because I never end up talking to anyone for long.

I love you man(or woman) as the case may be...our progressive community is beautiful.

And Sandi Mucci come back home homey, we miss you. It was so nice to see you.

Thanks everyone for the best time! (4.00 / 4)
I'll post tomorrow with a final head count.  We brought in major dinero for Hermano's.  I only hope the wait staff got tipped what they deserved.  Thanks to the folks who told me to "keep the change", especially Garth, who took his change via a kiss from the gatekeeper ;^D.  Did I mention that I had the best time?  My only error in judgement seemed to be only printing 24 blank nametags.  Our Blue Hamster events are becoming so popular that people were offering extra bux to be let in.

I only wish I had more time to mingle.  Maybe the next event should be a Blue Hampshire retreat?

Justica para todos.  Justice for all.  Pass it on.

Obama-Joker-- (0.00 / 0)
I think some of these efforts to define are mostly directed at the base, to whom they're supposed to be meaningful.  That's why we don't understand them.  Ditto for Obama-care.  It's probably supposed to be a pun on yo'mama care.  Then there was "The One" and, more recently, "The Star."  I think those are supposed to turn the base off his pompousness, which he doesn't have.

What these changing monikers suggest is that the image-masters are having a hard time finding one that sticks, like the "it's a character issue" stuck to Clinton for a long time.  The effort is focused on defining Obama's outsider status as a basis for his exclusion from the "group"--the Republican/silent majority they are certain still exists.  That was also behind the birth certificate flap and his "consorting with terrorists" etc.

The people who rely on exclusive strategies to cement their constituents are running out of ideas.  Many personal characteristics are no longer effective and they don't know how to use derision.  Besides, derision doesn't work with people who actually accomplish things.

Coalition of the Uninformed (4.00 / 1)

That guy was so proud of that Obama Joker sign. I've seen guys with a deer in the back of a pickup that weren't that stoked about their prize.
I have some video. I'll edit it up and see if I can do something with it.

Reading this thread I see that, like the only one of those gomers that had anything intelligible to say has posted in here. (nota bene; I said "intelligible", not "intelligent")

You're on that tape, eyore. If I can turn it into something worthwhile I'll post it.

Great meeting people like Dean, Jack, and PoliSigh, oh, and what's his name, the little guy with the really big blog. :)

[ Parent ]
My take on the Joker/Obama meme... (4.00 / 3)

1.) It makes him look like Death, and just like the Grim Reaper himself, OBAMA WILL KILL YOUR GRANDMA! BOOGITY-BOOGITY!

2.) It puts him in whiteface. He's just a black boy playing at a white man's game.

3.) It puts forth an incredibly simplistic statement that Obama's presidency is a joke, and Obama himself is a clown (which sort of contradicts the scary accusations of grandma-killing, but then, consistency isn't really a teabagger's strong suit).

It doesn't go any deeper than that.

Regards,
Corporate Dog

[ Parent ]
I don't think it goes even that deep. (0.00 / 0)
Someone at the party mentioned to me that the image of Obama as The Joker was created not as a political protest, but simply as graphic art.  If it were on a humor site instead of a sign, I think it'd be funny.

However, it's worth noting that the giant Obama-Joker sign being carried around yesterday had a line at the bottom: "Some people just want to see capitalism burn."  That's from The Dark Knight, kind of.  The actual line was "Some people just want to see the world burn."  So I don't think this is about race or death panels or anything like that.  I think it's about comparing a leader they don't like to the villain in a movie they do like.  It's not the first time in recent history that conservative protesters have tried to pretend movies made in Hollywood (!!!) with particularly outspoken liberals actually have conservative messages.

Republicans theme-makers are obviously flailing about (0.00 / 0)
for something negative that will stick and counter the possibility that groupies, which is what many of their constituents are, might turn out to be fickle--you know, like the fans of Michael Jackson and Tiger Woods.

Anyway, "Obamacare" seems to be an officially approved meme that's turning up at Republican town halls everywhere.  So, what I'm thinking is that we should arrogate it with a phrase like:

OBAMACARE = MAMACARE DELIVERED BY EXPERTS.

30th Anniversary (4.00 / 1)
Today Mary and I are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary by packing up our son to drive him off to George Mason University in Virginia. He's been doing a little work for the Hodes campaign this summer, and hopes to get involved in D.C. while at school. The Bash was a great way to start our festivities.

As far as the room size....for the value we get, can't be beat.Someone else can do it if they want a bigger space.
Old political saw..." for the shot I'd rather have a small room packed to the gills, than a big room that looks empty"

The rsvp's went from 33- to 60 almost overnight, and there is seemingly no good no way of predicting turnout.  It would be crazy to spend a lot of money...and in my humble opinion the fried food at teh Shaskeen sucks compared to the fresh organics and vegetarian fare at Hermanos.
Ahh back to blogging

Movin' on up !

If that is a free offer, we should definitely take a serious look. See it and decide and don't let the flatlanders scare ya.

Reminder:Blue Hampshire Peeps, ultimately that decision is above my pay grade, I just blog here. But I ached for you suited in your sweaty work clothes...I assure you the room was cool until it got filled.

We had 60+ rsvp's the day before the event and took in 87 people.
Without a draw next time, we go back to 30-40, would be my guess.
