Kelly Ayotte Reaffirms Opposition to Popular Public Plan

by: Dean Barker

Mon Sep 28, 2009 at 06:05:48 AM EDT

Our former government-insured AG (married to a government-insured veteran), who wants to be our next government-insured US Senator, would rather a for-profit private insurance industry bureaucrat stand between you and your doctor:
Ayotte said she would oppose a government, or public, option in any health insurance reform plan because it would lead to "turning over the health care system to the government, and I don't think that is the answer to better quality health care or lowering the cost curve. I don't think we should end up in a situation where there is a government bureaucrat in Washington between us and our doctors."
And darn those Medicare government bureaucrats getting in between our seniors and their health care!

When you think about it, the GOP position on health care is so untenable and unpopular it almost makes you feel bad for their position.  Until, of course, you remember how the Village and White House bend over backwards to include the Party of No in every discussion.

p.s. This would be a good time for Paul Hodes to express unequivocal support for the public option.

Evening Update: Congressman Hodes leaves a comment:

Public Option
Dean, Thanks for your comments on this critical issue. I strongly support a public option as an important part of reform of the health care system. It will help insure every American and increase competition in the health care marketplace, reducing cost for New Hampshire families. I will continue to advocate for it as the legislation moves through the process.

I think one of the bigger issues here is that she claims to be against "turning our health care system over to the government," but then at the very end of the article claims to be in favor of a full-service VA Hospital in NH.

So which is it?

Bloom County {sigh} (0.00 / 0)
Opus the penguin has just been bounced from the Meadow Party ticket for being too liberal, and has taken up farming as his next career.  Milo Bloom (the presumed ten year old son of the never seen or hinted at owners of the boarding house in which all the characters live) is helping him study a book entitled The ABCs of Farming:

OPUS: Go ahead, quiz me on chapter two.

MILO: "Say the following two things in one breath without cracking up."

   OPUS: Okay, shoot.

MILO: "Keep those flat-footed goombahs in Washington out of my hair..."

OPUS: "Keep those flat-footed goombahs in Washington out of my hair..."

MILO: "....Hurry up with my federal bail-out check."

OPUS: "Hurry up HEE HEE HEE HEE!!!!!"

(From a site that calls itself "An Outpost of the Republican Underground," but hey, it's the best source I could find....the interwebs weren't around in those days -- we had to pass around actual pieces of flimsy grey paper with comics printed on them, in ink.)

you're right (0.00 / 0)
I have no clue why Obama keeps wooing Republicans when he and the Democrats have all the votes they need to pass anything they want.  Just get all the Democrats (and the insane "blue dogs") in the senate on board and give the public what it wants.  When the Republicans are in power, they pass whatever stupid things they want and don't care what the democrats or the public would like.

I just received (0.00 / 0)
an email from Hodes with a survey in it asking if I supported a public option. Is this coincidental or is he testing the prevailing winds? I don't know.

Since Ayotte opposes gummint run health care does she supports her party's stance against cutting Medicare? If fiscal responsibility and keeping the Feds out of health care is the thrust of her argument then where does she stand on this critical issue? Is the RNC wrong? She should speak up and address this mixed message being sent out by the party leadership.

It's hard out there for a GOP'er.

. . . and that, my friends, is the next Senator from New Hampshire.

Congressman, you make us all very proud.

All my best,
Dartmouth Dem (aka Dave Lee)
