Bass gets in, promises to take us backwards

by: Colin Van Ostern

Wed Sep 30, 2009 at 13:43:41 PM EDT

Tomorrow, Charlie Bass is filing papers to run for Congress again (scoop: John Distaso), just a few years after the people of New Hampshire voted him out of office for supporting George W. Bush and his Republican agenda - the very agenda that almost brought our economy to its knees, left our health care system in crisis, set us years behind on dealing with global warming, left us less secure in the world, and pressed an anti-choice ideology throughout our government.

Seriously, how short does he think our memory is??

One of my favorite headlines ever from the Onion is from 1/17/01: "Bush: Our Long National Nightmare of Peace And Prosperity is Finally Over".  How prescient.

Today, I feel like Charlie Bass is promising the opposite - promising to take us backwards to the Bush years, while everyone other than him seems to realize we need to move forward.  There are better folks than me who can lay out Charlie's full record (Dartmouth Dem, I'm lookin' at you!), but I think we all can agree that it is time to move forward.

Colin Van Ostern :: Bass gets in, promises to take us backwards
Today now a critical moment in the campaign.

I'm  working for Annie McLane Kuster, because I know what she stands for, I know she represents the people of the second district of New Hampshire, and I know that she can beat Charlie Bass, Jennifer Horn, or whoever the GOP nominee turns out to be.

The contrast couldn't be more clear:

• Annie stands for an economy that works for all of us, not just a select few.

• She stands for investing in clean energy jobs and protecting our environment.

• She stands for reforming our health insurance system so that everyone has access to affordable care.

• She stands for an America that is strong and respected around the world.

• She stands up for our rights, including a woman's right to choose.

• She will work with President Obama as a partner, not an adversary.

If you stand with Annie, come to www.kusterforcongress.com and contribute TODAY to show Bass what is he in for.  If you are keeping your powder dry, then put some money in a sock drawer to give when you are ready - or give it to the NH Democratic Party TODAY at www.nhdp.org.  Or maybe BH can put together a "Democratic Nominee pledge drive" on Act Blue?

I know it is the last day of the quarter, and we all have gotten what seems like 937 emails asking for money today.  But today is a critical day in this race, and any help you can give is appreciated.

[In case it isn't clear from above: I work for Kuster for Congress.  Well, tomorrow I do.  Right now I'm still a volunteer :)]

...of Charlie's maiden congressional campaign.

I am convinced that any one of our three candidates will beat the Republican nominee.

Democrats solve problems, Republicans sit and say no.

Big mistake, Charlie. Big mistake.

Good diary, Colin. I'm not working for any of the campaigns, although Katrina Swett is a longtime friend who, in my opinion, would make an outstanding Member of Congress. Her expertise on human rights, in particular, would fill a huge progressive void.

Still, it is in the interest of ALL our outstanding candidates - Katrina, Jon, Ann, and anyone else who gets in the race - to expose Charlie's record of hypocrisy and indifference.

Fired up and ready to roll!

my response... (4.00 / 2)
New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley issued the following statement responding to reports that announced former Congressman Charlie Bass will run for his old seat in 2010:

"Granite Staters already rejected Charlie Bass' record and his commitment to the reckless policies of George W. Bush. He shouldn't expect 2010 to be any different.  His rerun candidacy represents the failed policies of the past that got our economy in the mess it's currently in, and that's the exact opposite of what we need to move our economy and country forward."

Actually its a cool take on history from Sherman and Mr.Peabody, travel back to 1953 and the CIA's overthrow of the elected President of Iran.

Wherein the Russians don't get a warm water port, but the U.S. stays entangled for years to come.

But Mister Peabody! You said you wouldn't (4.00 / 1)
get involved in politics!

Yes, I did say that. But you will recall that...

I never issued a Sherman statement.

Lead item in Landrigan this morning:

Democratic congressional candidate Ann McLane Kuster is on a roll, at least financially.

Raising money in this tough economic climate isn't easy for any first-time candidate, but one truism about politics is that the first $100,000 to bring into the kitty is the easiest.

Once you've hit on all your friends, business associates and like-minded citizens for a check, finding new donors is a grind.

But Kuster has done it again, not only putting up a solid number for the second quarter - $180,000 - but it's even more than the $163,000 she took in during the previous quarter.

In that first quarter, Kuster had raised more money than any other congressional candidate in the state, including 1st District Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, $120,000, and 1st District GOP candidate Frank Guinta, $110,00.

To date, more than 600 New Hampshire residents have chipped in for Kuster, a Hopkinton lawyer who seeks the nomination that Democratic Congressman Paul Hodes is vacating to run for the U.S. Senate.

Kuster also had a cash boom come in the final day of the quarter Wednesday, since it was the same day ex-Republican Congressman Charles Bass confirmed he was exploring his own bid for the 2nd District seat in 2000.

After the Bass story came out, Kuster sent out an e-mail challenging supporters to bring in online an extra $10,000. By midnight Wednesday, they had raised $15,600.

Earlier last week, there were more than 140 supporters at a house party for Kuster in Concord, and through her role as a lobbyist and advocate over the years, she has already won the endorsement of key abortion-rights supporters such as National Abortion Rights Action League President Kate Michelman and former National Organization of Women President Eleanor Smeal
