Last Wednesday, noting the 8% gap Kelly Ayotte had over Paul Hodes among women in the latest ARG poll (fwiw, being ARG, of course), I wrote: "This tells me that more Granite Staters could stand to learn about Ayotte's anti-choice positions and opposition to meaningful health insurance reform, among other things."
Well, a timely response has appeared. NARAL Pro-Choice America has, not unsurprisingly, backed Hodes for the Senate race:
NARAL Pro-Choice America has more than 10,000 member activists in the Granite State that the organization will mobilize in support of Rep. Hodes' election to the U.S. Senate.
"Rep. Hodes has a distinguished record of protecting and defending a woman's right to choose," Keenan said. "Most recently, Rep. Hodes played an important role in working to eliminate funding for dangerous and deceptive 'abstinence-only' programs. He's worked hard to answer the public's call to move away from these failed Bush-backed policies that have put our teens at risk. We are confident that, as a senator, Rep. Hodes will continue to stand up for women's freedom and privacy and keep up New Hampshire's tradition of strong pro-choice advocates, such as Gov. John Lynch, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter. Rep. Hodes' candidacy marks a great opportunity to add to the list of pro-choice senators."
Keenan said Hodes is likely to face an anti-choice opponent in the 2010 general election, setting up a clear contrast between a candidate who supports a woman's right to choose and one who wants politicians involved in women's personal, private decisions.
While it's unlikely any of those 10K NARAL members would have voted for Ayotte, it's nevertheless important to have an endorsement such as this.
When Judd Gregg hand-picked his Senate successor, he clearly took a good look around our state politics and noticed the tremendous gender gap we enjoy over the state elephants.
But Granite State voters aren't stupid. New Hampshire is a pro-choice state, and just because the latest anti-choice GOP candidate happens to be a woman isn't going to matter, provided that voters are aware she is anti-choice.
