Repealing DADT?

by: j cicirelli

Wed Jan 27, 2010 at 19:59:09 PM EST

(Please o please o please let the GOP run in 2010 on opposing DADT repeal... - promoted by Dean Barker)

CNN is reporting that Obama will request a repeal of DADT.  Is this a sign that he's willing to fight for progressive principles?

Link: http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITI...

Of course, because discrimination has worked so well, Bohner and the Republicans are against changing the policy.

If he uses his authority as Commander in Chief (4.00 / 1)
to end DADT on his watch, and asks for legislation to end it permanently, I will cheer.

elwood, we finally agree :-) (4.00 / 2)
As Commander-in-Chief and as the head of the Executive Branch, he could freeze prosecutions with a single executive order (just as Harry Truman integrated the armed forces half a century ago).

This is a political no-loser for the President:  If he ends DADT, he wins back the GLBT community which is NOT happy right now, and accomplished an great change.  If he loses, he gets to blame the GOP, and continues to take GLBT dollars and votes.

Now, if Meghan and Cindy McCain would just knock some sense into the old warhorse in their home....

That's a GREAT catch - (0.00 / 0)
the Truman analogy.

He also is giving the military an exemption from the freeze that other discretionary programs face. That's what people who play, you know, politics, call leverage.

But it ain't leverage if you never pull the lever.

A Big Fat NO! (4.00 / 1)
I think POTUS is using DADT to accentuate the "Party of NO!" meme.

The conversation around DADT will tether the GOPers to their flat earth views, for all the world to see.

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

Barney Frank said a few months ago that it would be in this year's NDAA. (0.00 / 0)
IIRC, Republicans even filibustered the National Defense Authorization Act last year.

If It Is Only A Bone... (4.00 / 2)
...it's an important one.  And it's not just about liberals -- it's about human beings, and it is also about having a strong military. Granted, he should do much more and I expect he will.  His first term is only 25% started.

I hope you're right, Jim (0.00 / 0)
I'm not hopeful.

Jim, you're a statesman and a coalition-builder... (0.00 / 0)
...but I'm not impressed.  Too many good soldiers have already lost their pensions and thei jobs, and he COULD stop the discharges NOW.  He COULD instruct the Justice Dept NOT to actively oppose the Log Cabin GOP lawsuite against DADT, instead of vigoruously defending it in terms 'flavor' that echoes Baldasaro.

We're being played, and have been from the start of the campaign.

Hmmm - if this means (4.00 / 4)
that he has all his ducks lined up in the Pentagon and senior military leadership, and there will be no general coming to testify that "The President's misguided proposal will hurt our  ability to defend America": That's impressive.

If he knows there will be a couple of those and already has mapped out how to deal with them: that's at least equally impressive.

This should have been done his first day in office (4.00 / 1)
I respect the sacrifices members of our military make on a daily basis. With that being said, I often hear from my friends in the service about how important the chain of command is in their lives. I just do not understand why Obama does not repeal this awful mistake by Clinton and go forward. The military is built upon a chain of command and Obama is the commander-in-chief. He needs to stop straddling the middle of the road, because to paraphrase PM Thatcher, you get hit by traffic going both ways when you do that.

res severa verum gaudia

Any comment from Baldassaro? n/t (4.00 / 1)

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

I have something (4.00 / 1)
from someone else in NH about this that you will greatly appreciate.  Stay tuned.

DNC Statement (4.00 / 1)
Statement from DNC Treasurer Andy Tobias, DNC Vice Chairman Raymond Buckley, and DNC LGBT Caucus Chairman Rick Stafford in Response to the President's Call for a Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

"Last night, before both chambers of Congress, the United States Supreme Court, and millions of viewers throughout the world, President Obama stood with America's LGBT community in calling for the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell.   Over the years more than 13,500  LGBT Americans have had their careers and dreams destroyed by the policy of mandatory expulsion from the armed services.  We applaud the President for recognizing and calling for an end to this discriminatory policy that has denied LGBT Americans the right of serving the country they love because of who they love.

"We encourage all LGBT Americans and supporters to stand with President Obama in the fight for fairness and dignity by contacting the members of the House and Senate to support this effort."

2012 starts today.
