You Just Can't Make This Up

by: Jennifer Daler

After reading this AP report in the Union Leader, I couldn't believe this quote:

Opponents [of killing the marriage equality repeal] said the consummation of gay unions can't be spoken of in polite society. They also said voters should decide, not lawmakers if the marriages should be allowed.

So I went to the House Record (bold mine)

Rep. Nancy J. Elliott for the Minority of  Judiciary:  The minority believes that last year the legislature made a mistake passing gay marriage.  Legislators ignored the voice of the citizens of New Hampshire to attend to the desires of special interest activists.   These activists would have us believe that heterosexual marriage and gay marriage are the same thing.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  The consummation of gay marriage cannot even be spoken of in polite society and a gay marriage is not valid without it.  We have said that this new group of people are married because of these practices.  This new marriage has nothing to do with fairness as two people that love each other but do not consummate, cannot be married.  To the minority this is confusion and should not have been placed into law.  The minority believes that it is time to recognize the error that was made and pass HB 1590 to repeal gay marriage.

Ummm  What was it she thought she was talking about, then?

This will be some debate.

'The majority giveth and the majority taketh away' is a distinctly un-American approach to people's rights.

Well, (4.00 / 4)
as to the contention that
The consummation of gay marriage cannot even be spoken of in polite society
based on past behaviors, one could make the case that the legislature may not be considered "polite society"...

Republicans believe government is bad - then they get into office and prove it.

What is this woman talking about? (4.00 / 3)
Even  if you wanted to agree with her, she is so incoherent that you can't agree with her.

Rep. Eliot, I don't want to talk about the consumation of anyone's marriage, gay, straight or whatever. It is none of my business.

The Catholic Church teaches that a marriage that hasn't (0.00 / 0)
been "consummated" via sexual intercourse can be annulled because it doesn't actually exist until the physical union of man and woman occurs.  There are, apparently, not a few people who are convinced that the state merely secularizes the permitting function that religion claims to own.  That a marriage is, at least in the modern West, a commitment between two individuals to which the community bears witness and records the commitment for posterity and whatever other purposes the records serve seems not to be understood.
Also, that establishments of religion are not to be interfered with by the state has led to the conclusion that religious establishments are superior to the state and, therefor, entitled to expect the state to provide legal backup for whatever behavior the establishments of religion demand.
In a society where everything and everyone is ranked and subject to being directed by superiors, the very idea that individuals make their own decisions and social arrangements is heretical.

Anyone know her history? (0.00 / 0)
I looked at her legislative record, but it just shows 2010.  When was she elected?  Etc.

Like, where the heck did she come from?!

We believe in prosperity & opportunity, strong communities, healthy families, great schools, investing in our future and leading the world by example. We are Democrats; we are the change you're looking for.

this is her third term (4.00 / 1)
and she came from Massachusetts. She opposed the civil union bill and minimum wage. She enjoys quilting and stained glass.

...of some of the opponents.  I think we'll be all set on Wednesday, but please make those calls.  I'll be writing a separate blogpost on that.  The cause goes on.

Wednesday???? (0.00 / 0)
Will there be testimony on Weds. or will this just be a voting procedure?

Wednesday.. (0.00 / 0)
is the day the full House is scheduled to vote on CACR 28 and HB 1590.

I think we have finally reached the problem. (4.00 / 2)
You "can't talk about the consummation of gay marriage in polite society." But the marriage equality opponents really, really want to talk about gay sex.

You can't talk about the consummation of straight marriage in polite society, either. But that doesn't bother them - because that is not their obsession.

all I know (4.00 / 3)
All I know is there is very few times I've been ashamed of NH and that video of Elliott making a fool out of herself was one of them.  Also I don't make a habit out of mentioning all the ways I think my friends have consummated their straight marriages and I sure as hell hope they don't talk about what they think my wife and I do in our bedroom.
