hits on what I wish had been hit over and over and over: how the current system makes people "job-locked" and crushes ingenuity and enterprise.

This is such an easy, and true, argument.

Very good point (0.00 / 0)
Here's a short article by Jonathan Gruber, Professor of Economics at MIT, explaining the circumstance:

owned, badly.

Tries to deflect incorrect premium rate increase data by saying he'll give it to BO later.

BO rejoins: great! we have all day - we'll have an answer by the end as to whether I'm right or you are

Steny Hoyer, of all people, comes to the defense of the public option as a cost containment mechanism.

do other countries have such hostility towards their capital cities (0.00 / 0)
The Republicans say they are against a federal plan because "Washington" would be deciding.  The insurance companies are just as centralized as the federal government, but they are not located in Washington, DC. Hence, we are supposed to conclude, it is better to leave health care in the hands of those companies, since they happen to be based somewhere other than Washington, DC. (The Social Security Administration is actually based in Baltimore, but that's not too far from Washington, DC.)

Do they say things like this in other countries?  Do the British gripe about "London"?  Do the French gripe about "Paris"?  Do the Ukrainians gripe about "Kiev"?  Do the Nicaraguans gripe about "Managua"?

I think in general the Europeans gripe about Brussels. n/t (4.00 / 3)

Speculation. (0.00 / 0)
I would imagine capital cities are generally used as metonyms only for some other country's government, by people in other countries.

Most countries' capitals are their equivalent of New York, not a special city created as a neutral sanctuary of the national government.

I see two sets of lobbyists (4.00 / 2)
The Republicans are lobbying for the insurance companies.

The President and other Democrats are lobbying for me.

McCain must be imploding right now.

McCain's Campaign (4.00 / 1)
Obama erred, thinking McCain was re-hashing the '08 campaign. McCain is using POTUS to run against the teabagger in AZ.

Strongly Disagree with Jack (0.00 / 0)
Even John McCain supports a Patients Bill of Rights.  If ordinary folks can't hold large insurance companies/HMOs accountable for screwing them over, then health care options for non-rich people will continue to decline.

Madame Speaker (0.00 / 0)

I was also greatly impressed with Rep. Slaughter, and with President Obama, among others.

I also thought it was very wise of the GOP to give the lead-off bat to Lamar Alexander.  He has a fine mind, and a silver tongue, and the GOP distortions of the bill felt genuine in his voice at times, though he was called on his statements by both Obama and Reid.
