The Money's Not on a Republican Resurgence in NH-02

by: Dean Barker

Thu Apr 08, 2010 at 06:11:05 AM EDT

Yesterday, news broke that Ann Kuster had raised more from New Hampshire supporters than any previous congressional candidate in state history ($285K total raised this quarter), and that's with three quarters still left to go.

Today, buried towards the bottom of today's Republican status (just underneath the vital news that Pawlenty consultant Pat Hynes will stop working on FauxHampshire so he can get paid by some local campaign), DiStaso was given the scoop for Swett's and Bass' numbers.  Swett earned $325K with over $1 million CoH.

Bass? $155K, with $262 CoH.

Of course, money is not a definitive indicator of an election (see Shea-Porter, Carol, 2006, 2008).

But, despite the appearance of a structural advantage for the GOP in the 2010 election cycle, it's not showing up in the money race for the second district (unless Jennifer Horn is going to surprise us with a significant haul).  Which is interesting given how Very Serious Election Pundits like Stu Rothenberg have declared NH-02 in very serious play this cycle.

Hmmmm.... Outperforms?

Understand it for what it is-a horserace meme (0.00 / 0)
If it were not her first quarter he would be correct. But to compare with say, Kuster, who has been at it a year,(not her first quarter) is ambiguous. No different than trad med,James makes these assertions to keep the pot boiling.
It is also true that Swett raised more in the first quarter 2nd CD race in 2002, (which I worked on as in-state Finance Director for about a month), and raised more in the first quarter of the 2008 Senate cycle, than she did here. Though Tom Lantos' networks and influence were central to her early successes, she continues to be an impressive fundraiser.

Here's to Verizon. I may buy stock, because the next quarters phone calls will be key. Dialing for dollars...and may the best woman win!

I'll go out on a limb and say, that I think there is a "money = media" meme. Trad Med folks try to draw campaign $$ to themselves. Big dollars, back in the day, meant ink and airtime. It doesn't work that way, so much, anymore. If it did, I'd be trying to figure out how to help Sen.Coakley get re-elected.

I was checking out a great new Paul Hodes video over on Pindell's site and I noticed this on the Swett link: NH-2 2010 press releases

So the "Big Claim" I mentioned, is not James editorializing. That line came straight from the campaign. So,we can cut Pindell loose from the "pot boiling" charge. We may have to wait for his questions from the debate dais.
Those are fun.

Here's the release (via email) (0.00 / 0)
Swett Outperforms All Congressional Candidates

CONCORD, April 8, 2010 -- Since filing paperwork with the FEC in January 2010, the Swett for Congress campaign has raised $325,000.  The campaign ends its first fundraising quarter with over $1 million dollars cash on hand, including $970,000 in primary election funds.

"We are pleased with this broad support.  Katrina has raised more than any congressional candidate of either party in a single quarter," said campaign manager Meagan Coffman.  "More importantly, Katrina is excited about the enthusiastic reception she has received as she's traveled around the district over the past few months."

It came after DiStaso came out, which meant they gave him pride of place.
