State of the NH Senate Races

by: Mike Hoefer

Wed Jun 09, 2010 at 15:18:33 PM EDT

(Bumped - promoted by Mike Hoefer)

Update: Now with the latest from the SOS. Joe Kelly Levasseur to take on Senator Lou. Tom Eaton hopes 3rd time is the charm in D10. Three way Battle Royal to be the Republican candidate from D4. Still no Republican candidates for 21 & 15, Still no Democratic candidates for 4 & 7. Friday is the last day to file.

The news of the retirement of  Sens. Sgambatti and Janeway is sad. They were a big part of the budding progressivism in the Senate and they will be missed. They really fit the mold of citizen legislators and in my mind really helped to bring "the real world" to Senate Chamber. Thank you for your service.

Dems currently have 3 2 seats without candidates and the Republicans have 6. The biggest empty space for Dems is D24. Pindell as be hinting that Martha Fuller-Clark may be up for a White House appointment. I'd hate to see her go, but it is a strong D district so we should be able to hold it should she move on to bigger things. Update: Burt says she is in so I've updated the spreadsheet.

This info is from: Harrell Kirstein and the "must see TV" at NH SOS

Sorted by strength of Dem Favored PVI according to the work done by wtucker. Incumbents in bold, no bold = open seat.

Very sad to see Sgambatti and Janeway go.

But Martha Fuller Clark IS running. She asked me for money yesterday, and says it all.

It is sad to see them leave the Senate... and it is also sad that we don't have candidates waiting to replace them. Those are two swing seats which need strong candidates.

We will retain the majority (0.00 / 0)
Not only will we have two outstanding candidates in 4 and 7...we have exceptional candidates running in all the other 22 districts.  I was told that the Republicans are completely rattled by a number of our candidates like Dorothy Solomon, Beverly Woods, Kathy Kelley and several the others.

In the last five elections, only three incumbent Democrats state senators have lost; one in 2000 (by 50 votes) and two in 2002 and both the Rochester and Claremont offices were "phonejammed". No incumbent Democratic state senator lost in 2004, 2006 0r 2008.

New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley's Statement on Sen. Kathy Sgambati's Retirement

NHDP Chair applauds Senator's years of service and commitment to improving the state of New Hampshire

Concord - New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley issued the following statement about Senator Kathy Sgamabti's decision to retire at the end of her current term.

"Senator Sgambati has been a strong voice for New Hampshire's working families.  In the midst of one of the worst economic recessions in history, she helped start and expand innovative programs like Healthy Kids and HealthFirst, while at the same time ensuring we kept the state's budget balanced.

"Throughout her decades of service as a top official of the state Department of Health and Human Services and her four years in office, Senator Sgambati was a tireless advocate for children, seniors and all of our state's most vulnerable citizens.  Her insightful approach and years of experience will be deeply missed on the Senate's Health and Human Services Committee, which she chaired. In 2008, Senator Sgambati was named "Legislator of the Year" for her leadership on health care issues.

"I want to thank Senator Sgamabti for her service to the state of New Hampshire and to the voters of the 4th District."

...Would LO*V*E* to see Odell say bye-bye....

[ Parent ]
No, but: (0.00 / 0)
Newport is one of the more R leaning towns in that district, so if he comes from there that and has some degree of name recognition that could be a great place to take away some R votes.

Odell is popular, but there is no reason whatsoever that district should be ceded to the GOP.

We need Govenrnor Lynch to be very public with his support there.

Latest State House rumor... (4.00 / 1)
Just got a call from a reporter who told me that he was told that the state Republicans are scrambling to find better candidates in 4 and 7. According to the reporter, the Republicans had essentially "written off" both districts and allowed weak Republicans to run.  They fear that our new candidates will be able to beat their current weak candidates which would make their path the the majority nearly impossible.  Not sure if it is true, but it made for a good chuckle with the reporter.

And, can we please flip 11? (0.00 / 0)
It's about time we had a shot at that one. I am sorry to say that I don't know too much about Roger Tilton, but I kinda wish Landrigan hadn't put the "maverick" designation on him today. And, didn't I hear that Steve Spratt was giving it another go (maybe from Jen Daler)? I had a very good conversation with Steve when he ran the last time.

I am sure either would be preferable to the incumbent!

Spratt (4.00 / 1)
Seemed like a good guy to me, and probably would have been closer without the late (October?) kerfluffle about threatening workers at his neighbors' house (?). I don't recall the specifics, though.

I don't know anything about Roger Tilton, either, but from a purely political point of view a candidate from Milford seems like a good idea—Milford and Amherst are about half the district's population, and it's probably easier for an "eastern" candidate to cut Bragdon's margin in those towns (pretty much necessary to win—Spratt lost the rest of the district 52-48, but was swamped 63-37 in Milford & Amherst).

[ Parent ]

probably would have been closer without the late (October?) kerfluffle about threatening workers at his neighbors' house

I believe that this was a minor hoopla that was inflated by the opposition into an "issue". In any case, I think you are right about the Milford/Amherst margin. 11 is a very polarized district on a town-by-town basis, but the eastern population definitely holds the power.

Will have to wait and see.

[ Parent ]
yes (4.00 / 1)
I didn't mean to imply it was a real issue, but my recollection was that it did get some play (maybe was in the ledger, at least?) and was right before e-day—i.e., probably did depress Spratt votes.

[ Parent ]
Dear Governor Lynch (4.00 / 4)
You no longer have a margin of error in the senate - the majority is on the line.

District 8 is D+5.

Keeping the senate majority requires your full and public support for Mr. Perkins.

Would love to see the PVI for a number of House seats.

Andrew Hosmer Announces Campaign for District 4 State Senate Seat

Small businessman and attorney seeks seat in New Hampshire senate

Laconia - Today, Andrew Hosmer officially filed with the Secretary of State's office as a candidate for the state senate in District 4.  Hosmer is an attorney and small businessman from Laconia with strong ties throughout the Lakes Region.

"I know exactly how difficult this recession has been for Granite State businesses," said Hosmer.  "And I know exactly what we need to do to keep New Hampshire strong and leading the national economic recovery."

Hosmer is an executive manager at AutoServ, his family owned dealership with locations in Laconia, Tilton and across the Granite State. The business, which he runs with his wife Donna, employs nearly 200 individuals across the state.

"In these tough times, taxpayers, small business owners, and New Hampshire citizens deserve a state senator who works just a hard as they do," continued Hosmer.  "In the state senate, I will be an independent voice and advocate for the people of District 4."

In addition, Hosmer is an active member of his local community, serving as Chairman of the Endowment Board of St. Joseph's Church, and coaching youth soccer in Laconia.  He and his wife have four school-aged children, and they have lived in the lakes region for nearly 20 years.

Retiring state senator Kathleen Sgambati will serve as the fiscal agent for Hosmer's campaign. State Senate District 4 includes the towns of Alton, Barnstead, Belmont, Gilford, Gilmanton, Laconia, New Durham, Strafford and Tilton.

Democrat Tremblay files for Senate Dist 7 (0.00 / 0)

Michele L. Tremblay Files to run for New Hampshire District 7 Senate Seat

Small business owner and local environmental activist announces candidacy

Boscawen - This morning, one of New Hampshire's top environmental experts and Boscawen area small business owner, Michele Tremblay, officially filed with the Secretary of State and will seek the District 7 state senate seat.

"I have run a business helping numerous public and private companies and non-profit groups improve their organizational management, budgeting techniques, and resource allocation," said Tremblay.  "I am going to bring that expertise to Concord to keep taxes low, government efficient, and continue moving New Hampshire forward."

"This is a pivotal time for our state," Tremblay continued.  "During this terrible recession, it is more important than ever to be planning for New Hampshire's long term future, both financially and environmentally."

As a New Hampshire native and resident of Boscawen for the past 26 years, Tremblay has been active on numerous conservation and environmental organizations.  She currently serves as the chair of the Boscawen Conservation Commission, president of the New Hampshire Rivers Council, vice-chair of the State Rivers Management Advisory Committee,  and chair of the Upper Merrimack River Local Advisory Committee on which she has served for years.

"I have always been very committed to public service," added Tremblay.  "There is nothing more important than making sure we leave our state and community better than we found it for the next generation."

Retiring District 7 State Senator Harold Janeway will serve as the chair of Tremblay's campaign, and former House Minority Leader and District 7 State Senator, Rick Trombly will serve as the fiscal agent.

"I am looking forward to meeting all of the citizens in the Harrisvile, Nelson, Antrim, Bennington, Deering, Francestown, Hancock, Hillsborough, Weare, Bradford, Boscawen, Canterbury, Hennicker, Loudon, Northfield, Salisbury, Warner, Webster, and Windsor and I plan on working hard to earn their votes," she added.

District 21 (4.00 / 1)
We should not be listing Peter McDonald as a Democratic candidate. Many of you may remember him as the person who was arrested and thrown in jail for threatening Gov. Benson. After that he turned his attention to Democrats and has spent years harassing Democratic candidates. The police in Strafford County have had to intervene because of his behavior towards former Sen. Iris Estabrook and US Rep. Carol Shea-Porter. His only purpose in running for office is to oppose Democrats. He should not appear on list of Democratic candidates.

he paid the ten bucks (0.00 / 0)
Peter McDonald paid the ten dollar filing fee; he filled out the paperwork; he will be on the ballot.  His campaign will likely be limited to the occasional incomprehensible letter in the Foster's Daily Democrat & some illegible signs in front of his property on Packers Falls Road.  He is in fact a master of illegible & incomprehensible signage: he has been a teabagger since the days when teabagging wasn't even a gerund yet.

[ Parent ]
gerund (0.00 / 0)
wow! haven't seen gerund used in a sentence in a long time. Nice!

[ Parent ]
What's your point ??? (4.00 / 1)
He should appear on the ballot as a candidate for the Democratic nomination, per state law - but Blue Hampshire should pretend it isn't so????
