NH-02: Concord Monitor, Keene Sentinel Endorse Kuster

by: Dean Barker

Tue Sep 07, 2010 at 05:56:56 AM EDT

Kuster gets the endorsement of the Monitor:
No contest in the 2010 New Hampshire primary offers voters a tougher choice than the one between Democrats Katrina Swett and Ann McLane Kuster for the 2nd District congressional nomination. The candidates are both well-qualified and differ little on the issues. The district's voters can't lose, no matter whom they choose. That said, our vote goes to Kuster, whose home-grown support and two decades of work bringing lawmakers from both parties together on issues in a legislature the size of the U.S. House gives her an advantage.

...Kuster, who has received nearly 90 percent of her campaign contributions from New Hampshire sources, has demonstrated that she has the support and confidence of a large number of her district's voters. She's also proven that she has the skills to help do what's sorely needed in Washington: convincing people on all sides to come together, end the gridlock and get the nation moving again.

In the Democratic primary in the 2nd District, Kuster deserves your vote.

It will be interesting to see the endorsements as they roll out at this point. If you see one from your local paper, let us know!

Adding: I find it interesting that Afghanistan played a role in their thinking.  More evidence that running to the left of Obama on the war is actually the popular view.

Update by Mike: Today The Keene Sentinel Endorsed Ann McLane Kuster as well.

Still another plus is her lawyer experience in negotiation. She comes across as a tough bargainer who also knows that protracted stalemates don't normally serve the client - in this case, the public - very well.

"I'm in it to win it!" (0.00 / 0)
Annie said that to me a while back. I was impressed, at the time, with her energy.

Now....?  Hell YA!

Whatever happens on Sept.14th, we all must be in it to win it. Put all the gooblygook coming from the tradmed out of your head.

We can hold NH-01 & NH-02, plus pick up the second Senate seat. It must be done

Ignore those that conjour the prosperity under the Clinton Administration. They will claim that it is better to have the Congress split from the party of POTUS.

Those days are D-E-D, dead. The Republican Party has promised to shut down the government. All they know is NO!

We all must be, ïn it to win it!

Katrina's late June interview with the paper, did not close the deal.

http://www.concordmonitor.rste...
Katrina Swett of Bow, a Democratic candidate for the 2nd District seat in Congress, met with the Monitor editorial board last week and was asked about criticism of the large number of her political donors who come from out of state. Here was her response:

I think it is used by opponents to try and create a sense that somehow, gee, Katrina's not as grounded in New Hampshire. But, you know what, that's just such a ridiculous thing to say.

first mistake...don't talk about yourself in the third person, it bespeaks how important you think you are, at least to yourself.

Not only have I lived here for a quarter century, been involved - incredibly involved - in the now half a lifetime that I've lived here, I've raised more kids in New Hampshire than all of my other opponents put together.

Oh really? I guess she never checked out all the bikes in Jennifer Horn's garage...

I have attended more soccer, more football, more basketball games. I have cooked and baked more brownies for more PTA sales, I have volunteered more hours in my local public schools than all of them put together.

and that counts how ?

One Bow voter responded thusly...

snip
Since her husband was defeated for re-election, the Swetts have been amassing money, mainly from out-of-state and, when her father was alive, from his state of California. When she lost her race for Congress, she held on to leftover funds and continued to raise money. When she ran for Senate, she raised even more money, only to drop out when a "better" candidate (Jeanne Shaheen) emerged, so there wouldn't be an expensive primary.

Certainly, if Swett had New Hampshire's best interest at heart, she would have ignored the out-of-state pressure to drop out. Again, she held onto that money. Her fundraising never stopped, and she never attempted to return any of the money that was supposed to fund a Senate race.

The fact is, the Swetts have been repudiated by the real voters of New Hampshire twice, and she turned her back on them during her Senate race. Her 11 percent percent fundraising in New Hampshire does not demonstrate a political base here. It merely serves to highlight the debt she owes to out-of-state interests.

Mr. Martin, from Bow, hit some of the points that have lingered in my mind.

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

thanks to the Rakkasans of the 187th! (4.00 / 1)
with apologies to Andy Sylvia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1...
The 187th Infantry Regiment (Rakkasans [1]) is a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) of the United States Army.

The regimental motto is the Latin "Ne Desit Virtus" ("Let Valor Not Fail"). The nickname "The Rakkasans" is derived from the Japanese word for umbrella. The name was given to the 187th during its tour in occupied Japan following World War II. When a translator dealing with local Japanese dignitaries was trying to explain what their unit was trained to do (and not knowing the Japanese word for "airborne soldiers") he used the phrase "falling down umbrella men", or rakkasan. Amused by the clumsy word, the locals began to call the troopers by that nickname; it soon stuck and became a point of pride for the unit.

Currently, the 1st Battalion - 187th Infantry and the 3rd Battalion - 187th Infantry are active in the 101st Airborne's 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

It's a nice positive thread, JB (0.00 / 0)
. . . so why do you need to post nasty personal insults like that Martin letter?

Personally, I was grateful that Katrina and Steve Marchand backed out in favor of Jeanne Shaheen.  It was a major sacrifice for both of them, and it merits praise, not ridicule.

The phrase to emphasize. . . . (4.00 / 2)
The district's voters can't lose, no matter whom they choose.

I'm a proud Swett supporter, but I agree with that.  Beat Charlie's ass.

Sentinel GOP Senate Pick = Lamontagne (4.00 / 2)
Sentinel GOP Sen Endorsement

All this year's Republican candidates for New Hampshire's U.S. Senate seat apparently picked up their campaign positions in the same flea market.

Ayotte and Binney get the poison pen...

Lamontagne did not pop out of the bushes late last year, armed with a resume in an unrelated field and a truckload of campaign contributions. He is not an entrepreneur using a business fortune to bedazzle motorists with campaign signs that attempt to hammer home a previously unknown name.

And explaining their pick at the end....

There is precious little in this year's Republican position papers that is likely to improve the lot of ordinary Americans. Barring write-ins, those who vote in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate September 14 will be picking candidates who tack very far to the right. They might as well pick someone with a consistent social and political track record and a history of involvement in their party and its politics - someone they'd heard of more than a few months ago and who, if he were elected, would engage in politics with civility.

It was "Which neanderthal?" (4.00 / 1)
The Sentinel makes a pick in each party's primary. But it's pretty clear that the paper won't find any of the candidates a good choice in the general.
