The Republican leadership, plus "Bombs Away" Joe Lieberman, blocked the "no-confidence" vote on Abu Gonzales just now in the Senate by not allowing cloture to be invoked (60 votes needed for that). This allowed our lovely Loserpalooza quartet to put in a nice show of looking tough without actually having to vote against the man standing between King George and prison.
How telling that out of the seven Republicans who voted to allow a vote to happen, five of them are serious pick-up opportunities: Hagel, Collins, Coleman, Smith, and our own Sprintin' Sununu. Big surprise there. (Perhaps Chuck could be the opening act?)
Had John E. actually voted to express "no confidence" in the man he helped install as Attorney General, despite knowing that he is one of the Founding Fathers of America's new fetish for torture, I would have praised him, and done it on the front page. But I've been listening to music a long time, and I know a faux indie set when I hear it. Nice try, Mitch.
Morning Update: The Sprinter, wanting to have it both ways, shows his profound understanding of his oversight role in Congress:
"A lot of senators felt strongly that this was a meaningless resolution and that this was political theater," said Senator John Sununu, a New Hampshire Republican. "At the same time they've been fairly disappointed in the leadership of the Justice Department."
Funny he would mention "theater" without acknowledging the leading Role Mitch gave him in it.
