After thanking her husband for his introduction, Senator Clinton spoke for a little over twenty minutes covering a wide range of subjects. Among other things she called for universal healthcare coverage, pre-Kindergarten education for children, the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, and for restoring America's standing in the world.
Senator Clinton also spent an extra few minutes during her speech explaining why she was for legislation to close a tax loophole for investment managers that allowed them to pay lower tax rates than working class Americans.
We're going to start imposing a fair rate of taxation on the private equity firms. They should not get benefits are not available to other hard-working Americans.
She used comments made by Warren Buffett, the successful investor, in making her point. Mr. Buffett has helped raised money for her and Buffett has spoken highly of her as a person to lead this country.
The Clintons then traveled on to Nashua and to Manchester to speak before thousands in each of those cities. As the Concord Monitor reported, people in the crowds apparently liked what they heard:
"People always say she's aloof and strident," said Cheryl Houston, of Hillsboro. "She broke that barrier today."
Bill Clinton "would be an asset to her administration," Houston added. "I have very strong Bush fatigue, but I don't have Clinton fatigue."
"She was a better speaker than I expected," said Dorothy Bacon, of Jaffrey. "I think she did just as well as he did." Bacon worried that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama lacked experience. Hillary Clinton, she said, "has the experience."
"Hillary's a wiz," said Lydia Johnson of Nashua. "They're a great team."
"I don't think she needs him to campaign," said Judy Ullman of Portsmouth, who attended the Nashua event and has yet to decide on a candidate. "It was fun to see him. But I'm more impressed with her."
