Sprintin' Sununu "Pretty Invisible in New Hampshire"

by: Dean Barker

Mon Jul 30, 2007 at 22:53:53 PM EDT

There's a new piece in Real Clear by Reid Wilson on the serious trouble the Sprinter's in.  I encourage you all to take a look and let us know your take on it.

My favorite part of the article is the title of this post, as opined by ARG pollster Dick Bennett. The other is that it makes clear that, yes, Shaheen is trouncing him in the polls, but also, and in my opinion more telling for John E., that the other declared candidates, especially Marchand and Swett, are polling within the MoE over a year out and with little name rec.  Of course we all know that here, but to hear it mentioned in a nationally read piece will help to underscore the Sprinter's true vulnerability.

Kathy Sullivan is quoted in the piece making a point that I think is obvious to us Blue Hamsters, but seeing it written made me think:

Sullivan... says Shaheen's political organization is the same being used by Lynch and New York Senator Hillary Clinton.

My one major quibble?  The relative clause "[Sununu], whom few view as an extremist conservative."

I don't know about that one.  I mean, denying that climate change has to do with humans, voting to abolish the minimum wage, Terry Schiavo, telling us to be quiet about health care costs, voting in lockstep with Bush on Iraq time and time again... those things wwigh a lot more heavily to me than suggesting Gonzo ought to leave voluntarily.

Sloppy journalism (0.00 / 0)
Historically, more Republicans vote than Democrats in New Hampshire, though the two groups are dwarfed by the state's independent and undeclared voters. In 2004, 32% of the electorate identified themselves as Republicans, while 25% called themselves Democrats. The rest of the electorate said they were independents.

The 2006 numbers are readily available. They show the GOP at 30%, the Dems at 26%. A 4% spread, not a 7% spread.

Political organization (0.00 / 0)
or old boy machine ... I hope NH will get more interesting when the non-political voters start to take an interest.  If one more "activists" says "I'm so ready to vote for a woman"  I think I'll loose my pacifist standing.  I did reply "I'd like to vote for a woman too, but not that one because..."

standing on the sidelines looking for a reason to enter the fray.

I'm giving up! (4.00 / 3)
Maybe I won't talk to the press anymore!  I didn't say Shaheen's political organization was the same being used by Senator Clinton and Governor Lynch. What I said was that some presidential campaigns rely more heavily on people from out of state, and there are some that rely more heavily on people with NH experience. I said several people who came up through Gov. Shaheen's organization in NH are working for Senator Clinton, and some of them previously worked for Governor Lynch. I also said there were a few who worked for the NHDP coordinated campaign in prior years were working, for example, with Senator Dodd.  To distill that into the notion that there is a monolithic organization that goes from campaign to campaign isn't accurate. People with NH experience are typically sought after by presidential campaigns.

Energy and persistence conquer all things.

Benjamin Franklin

Thanks for the clarification, Kathy. (0.00 / 0)
I didn't take the connection to be as direct as may be implied, but I see where you are coming from in explaining it further.

I know how easy it is to misunderstand a source, but when your notes state something patently absurd, like the notion that three politicians are using the same organization (as if it's a car that can be borrowed), that's when you call the source back for clarification.

The offensive relative clause is on slightly more solid ground; remember, you have to consider the field:
