I Can't Stand Elizabeth Edwards (rant)

by: Dean Barker

Sun Nov 18, 2007 at 19:39:18 PM EST

I can't stand Elizabeth Edwards.

I have a strict policy concerning families of politicians. Put simply: I don't care about them.  They play no role in my decision-making process about a candidate, and talk of First-Ladyhood gives me the creeps, frankly.  It strikes a sour royalist tone in my democracy loving heart every time. I'm voting to elect a public servant, not a blood line.  Camelot?  Ick.

I can't stand Elizabeth Edwards because she breaks this policy of mine into tiny little pieces.  She's always struck me as really down to earth, and the kind of rare person from the political world with whom you'd actually like to hang out.  When you add to that her decision to carry on with the campaign after the vagaries of her medical challenges, and she not only becomes cool in my eyes but also inspiring.

So when Amy Rubin invited me to come to Elizabeth's blogger meeting, despite the fact that I'm a proud Chris Dodd supporter (thanks Amy), I jumped at the chance, so that I could see for myself in person just what it is that attracts me to her.  Here's what I found:

1) A shocker worthy of high Drudgeon: Ms. Edwards is completely normal.  She's comfortable in her own skin.  She puts people at ease.  She's nice. As in, the kind of nice you hope your neighbors will be when you move to a new place.

2) Ms. Edwards is smart.  She talks fast, and well.  She is a natural progressive in her beliefs.  She is an articulate spokesperson for her husband's platform.  She does not end sentences with prepositions.  She not only used the uncommon Latinate adverb seriatim in casual speech, but she used it correctly.  She admitted openly that before her political blogging escapades, she used to fight it out online in a forum on grammatical topics. (And when's the last time we had a grammar nerd living in the White House?  Teddy Roosevelt?)

3) Best of all: Ms. Edwards is utterly at home in the blogosphere.  As she said, she was tinkering online from way back in the Prodigy and Compuserve days.

* The internet? "The most democratic media that could be devised."

* Blogging? The new "town square."

* Bloggers' credibility? "These people are fact checking one another all the time."

* Net Neutrality? "Incredibly important."

* Wikipedia? She corrects her entry frequently.

* The Edwards' campaign attitude on blogger supporters? "Our job is to provide you with the positions, where we're going to be", etc.. "It's not to manage you... Plants don't work."

I remember hearing Howard Dean, four years ago in Keene, declare that a Dean Administration would include a White House blog.  Somehow I don't think that in an Edwards Administration it would be necessary to appoint someone for that.

I came for Elizabeth, (4.00 / 4)
but it was like a BH party in there.

Nice seeing you again Laura, Jon, and Aldon, and nice to meet you in person smucci, BTB, lynne, and elwood (!).

Wonder if Sununu's fired now.

It was great to see everyone. (4.00 / 1)
I am disappointed that I didn't meet elwood, or if I did, I wasn't aware of it.  I'm also disappointed there wasn't more of a chance to stand around and talk more, or perhaps go out for coffee.

I will say that your dislike of Elizabeth mirrors quite nicely my respect for Elizabeth.  I think candidate's spouses can be extremely important.  Yet that comes from having been a candidate's spouse and campaign manager at the same time.

Other random comments:  I'm from Connecticut, but I do love coming up to participate in real, hands on retail presidential politics, and I thank everyone who has been so gracious to me.

As many of you know, I'm a big Edwards supporter, even though there is a great candidate from my home state running.  Dodd runs a close second in my book and I hope that we see both of them working together in the next Presidential administration.

A spouse is a window into the candidate's heart. (0.00 / 0)
Sometimes I think we tend to think that spouses are just there for show, but most people are married for deeper reasons then decorum. I still cringe over the way Teresa Hienz Kerry was treated like a "power marriage" prop by the repugs and some press.

I don't "get" John Edwards. When he talks on the TV, I get the feeling I am watching an infomercial.

Elizabeth strikes me 180 degrees in the opposite way. That is the biggest reason I cut John any slack whatsoever. That and the Outward Bound pin. I have mad respect for the pin.

Sleeping Giant (0.00 / 0)
come to Harts Turkey Farm in Meredith next Sunday and hear John Edwards in person.  the TV does not do him any favors.  You would surely "get" John if you saw him in person.  Not saying you would switch - because I expect you won't - I try to see all the candidates and know them just in case my heart gets broken again.

I don't travel much on the weekends (0.00 / 0)
I will meet John someday, I'm sure.

I am doing renovations on the house and have to sneak politics in around my hottie.

During the week. I'm free most evenings.

Niiiiice Aldon, my brother in law is Alden also, all the same I guess. You type like a banshee...I am glad I am in the privacy of my own home, doing the old two finger search and destroy.

Elwood was there! (0.00 / 0)
I knew we needed name tags.  This was the first "bloggers" event I have ever attended and I had to smile when I looked up while Elizabeth was talking and across from me 6 of you had your laptops actually on your laps (who knew you really don't need a table) and were typing away.  No wonder you can get your diary's up days ahead of me.

Finally, a face with a username! (0.00 / 0)
Yup, I was there and didn't realize it was all of you.  (I should have asked for nametags!)  I'm so bad with names/usernames.  Anyhow, pleasure to meet you all.

I was supposed to do the introduction--that's why I had that seat up front next to her like Oprah or, more appropriately, Ellen.  But EE had other ideas.  She just came in & got right down to it, which was fine by me.

Your title scared me, Dean.  I was, for a few seconds, wondering how you could have been in the same room I was in, & not like her. She's so completely normal & at ease with herself.  Seeing her & John together, you really get a sense of him.  Watch the way he looks at her.

One last comment I cannot let go of (or, of which I cannot let go):  What, Dean, did you mean by saying "You look like the way you write???"  Should I be flattered or insulted, or a little of both.  ;-)

Looking the way we write (4.00 / 1)
I guess my writing needs a little trim, or at least a little editing.  Perhaps my words are a tad unkempt.

Are my words getting older a little balder and fatter?  Is my vocabulary out of shape?  Or, is there a maturity to my writing?

Life is too short to be insulted, so I am taking Dean's comments as a compliment, whether they were intended that way or not.

Thanks - you saved me a lengthy comment (0.00 / 0)
where I confess that I don't remember saying that at all, and then being embarrassed about not remembering, and not knowing what I meant by it...

As for you, pdinardo, from your description in the comment above, I don't remember meeting you but I think I can visualize who you were at the gathering.

It really was a BH crowd, wasn't it?

Wonder if Sununu's fired now.

See how bad I am with names.  Yes, you are right, it was Jon B...I'll correct myself in my blog.  Sorry.

I was worried because my blogging is a bit stream of consiousness, random, not necessarily fact-based.  Useless gossip about EE's shoes (cute!).  So, I guess i'd look like someone who cares about cute shoes.  ;-)

No offense taken; flattered you remembered me at all...

What do Hillary Clinton and John Edwards have most in common? (0.00 / 0)
Each has a spouse better suited to be President than they are.

Disagree. (0.00 / 0)
You'll see why later.

I actually turned down the invite to meet with Mrs. Edwards because I think the promotion of family members as an extension of the candidate is in bad taste.  It's one of the things I found bothersome about Katrina Swett parading all those children at the Dem Convention.

The Obama campaign uses Michelle to grab a lot more attentiion than the candidate can rightly claim.  On the other hand, it would have been better to send Michelle to the Granite State Independent Living forum than to ignore the 500 advocates for health care and disabled individuals entirely.  Talk about dissing ordinary folk!  As I've mentioned before, Senator Biden gave a lovely homily on the connection between equality, opportunity, access and dignity.  And I came away with the realization that we're all equal in lacking one talent or ability we'd like to have.

that also impressed me when I first heard about that. And that she used to tough it out in the usenet discussion groups long before net "civility" really existed. And you had to be geeky just to figure out how to use them.

Excellent post Dean, she's one of the least self-concious political persons I've ever seen.

The first time I met her, (4.00 / 1)
she said something about static vs. dynamic IP addresses, which gave some of my geekier friends a total thrill that someone like her would know concepts like that.

Bloodlines (0.00 / 0)
Dean, I hate bloodlines too, whether they are in the form of Clinton, Kennedy, Sununu, Shaheen, or others.  But EE isn't running for anything and won't.  Ever.

I confess:  I "Heart" candidate spouses.  Whether we like it or not, they become the official hostesses of the Whitehouse and thus, our nation.  I loved the thought of TerAAYza giving everyone a run for their money, but it wasn't meant to be.

I really really want Elizabeth as First Lady, and not just cuz I sat next to her for an hour.  Or because I fed her that "plants don't work line".  She's just AWESOME.

Nice to meetcha!

Bloodlines? (0.00 / 0)
Shaheen doesn't count, I don't think - her husband has never stood for office. The others to be mentioned would include Gregg and Bass.

I don't recall ever having even the glimmer of a matching Democratic dynasty of elected officials in New Hampshire. (The Dunfeys were great to the Party for many years, but didn't run for major office.)

[ Parent ]
Well, unless you count a number of families with multiple State Reps living under one roof. (4.00 / 1)
But I don't.
