NRSC's Ensign Admits Colleagues Not Helping Sununu and Others

by: Dean Barker

Sun Mar 16, 2008 at 08:49:11 AM EDT

Somebody call NRSC chair John Ensign a whaaaambulance:
The Senate Republican campaign committee's motto from early on in the 2008 cycle has been "Two Seats" - the net gain it needs in November to retake the majority.

But a resigned National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman John Ensign (Nev.) said this week that goal is a "very long stretch" at this point, and he conceded that recruitment failures and an unhelpful Senate GOP conference have hindered his efforts in what was already a perilous cycle.

...Ensign said about half of the Senate's 49 GOP members are "not even close" to being on pace to raise the amount of money they are expected to for the committee and fellow candidates. The members are expected to raise between $750,000 and $3 million, depending on seniority and stature.

So, to sum up: Sununu's fellow GoOPers aren't too interested in helping him out, and they don't expect to be in the majority anyway.  So why on earth would we want both of our senators in the minority?  Yet another reason for to be working hard for Jeanne.

Thank You, Chuck Schumer (4.00 / 1)
DSCC Cash-on-Hand (1/1/08) - $29.4 million
NRSC Cash-on-Hand (1/1/08) - $12.1 million

That provides the good guys with a nice little cushion to, say, invest heavily in Boston TV this coming October.

And Sununu faces much competition for the NRSC's limited funds. . . . Six years ago, during the last GOP landslide, the Republicans won Senate seats that they had no right to hold.  Now the chickens are coming home to roost.  The list of GOP Senate seats under attack includes:

MN - After Mike Ciresi's drop out this week, '02 fluke winner Norm Coleman faces a Democratic Party united behind Al Franken.

AK - Longtime incumbent Ted Stevens faces an impeding indictment, and popular Anchorage Mayor Nick Begich just threw his hat into the ring.  Looks like we could be on the cusp of our first Alaska Senate seat since Mike Gravel '74!

VA - John Warner retires, Mark Warner takes his place.  This baby is a slam dunk.  A decade ago, who would've thought that we would be in control of every major office in Virginia?  Personally, I would've much rather seen Warner run for President, but will take that extra Senate sea.

CO - Popular centrist Rep. Mark Udall is favored in the polls to take the seat of retiring fascist Wayne Allard.  Another GOP recruiting failure.

OR - Not a spectacular recruiting success, but Oregonians have been harsh critics of the war.  Expect the Dem state house speaker to give Sen. Gordon Smith a fight.

Couple this with GOP failures to recruit any candidates of substance in South Dakota, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota, and Arkansas, among others. . . . Even if our presidential race continues to evolve into a clusterf*ck, our majority should be protected.

Rep. Tom Udall is running, has the support of a very popular Gov. behind him.

Maybe we should encourage Fmr. Sen. Gravel to retake a certain Senate seat...

Forgot about that one -- another big recruiting success.

Gravel Defecting to Support Green
Former Democratic presidential candidate Mike Gravel is defecting from his Party to support a Green for President.  He has announced his support for Jesse Johnson according to the DC Statehood Green Party.  You can review my coverage of last July's national Green Party convention (in our archives) for more information about their candidates.  It was a rather amusing several days speaking with their strange assortment of presidential contenders.  I think Gravel fits in with them.

Could that possibly make him less relevant? (0.00 / 0)
I think not.

Indeed. (0.00 / 0)
This post over at the Guru speaks to this positive development too.

What I found significant in the article (4.00 / 1)
[Ensign] also suggested he won't spend any of that money on GOP-held seats that appear to be lost.

The seat of retiring Sen. John Warner (R-Va.), in particular, looks to be a steep uphill battle for the party with former Gov. Mark Warner as the likely Democratic nominee.

"If they are gone, you don't put any money in there; if they're way up, you don't put any money in there," he said. "It's the races that we can make the differences."

If they are writing off Democratic pick-up seats(!!), John E. should be worried that he's next to be thrown overboard. His seat has been considered second- or third- most likely pickup for months.
