Guinta Sits on the Sideline

by: Dean Barker

Wed Mar 26, 2008 at 20:25:39 PM EDT

Manch Mayor Frank Guinta, one month ago:
I'm the kind of individual that's not going to sit on the sideline and watch my state change. I cannot do that," Guinta told a gathering of Republican activists in the Lakes Region yesterday. "And if I have to go into every corner of the state and talk about the value system I have, the successes we've had in Manchester and how I think we can apply them at the state level, I will do that."

Today, Guinta announced he was sitting on the sideline.  Turns out he's not running against John Lynch after all. Pia Carusone wonders if it has to do with his pothole problem.  I'm not so sure, though I'm not exactly convinced it's because of competition with Joe Kenney either.

Traveling, fundraising, the constant attention from the Union Leader - the whole thing felt like it was in the bag, a done deal.  And now it's just done.

I half expect another shoe to drop.

Maybe it was over his despicable attack on Rep. Scannell (4.00 / 2)
The reaction from the public looks pretty lopsided, according to the WMUR online poll:

Should Rep. Dave Scannell resign over his vote on HB 1623?

Percentage of 2031 Votes
Yes, he's sending a mixed message to kids..............................................................................................................15%
No, he's helping ensure that someone who made a mistake won't pay for it for the rest of their lives... 79%

You can thank us whenever you're ready, Gov. Lynch ;)

I wondered about that. (0.00 / 0)
If you're going to try to destroy a person like that, it must mean you have some serious ambition, in this case, a gubernatorial run.

That episode makes the bowing out even more mysterious to me.  The Scannel attack was a reckless and wrong thing to do in the first place - but to do it with no intention of political gain is odd.

Unless of course I have it backwards, and you are right, and the attack itself so badly backfired that it poisoned the well of his local support?

(You can tell I don't live in or near Manchester...)

Yeah, you probably right (0.00 / 0)
Unless Frank Guinta doesn't have a political bone in his body, I probably have it backwards.
You can tell I'm not from Manchester either.

it was a big deal, but really (0.00 / 0)
i doubt thats what caused him not to run. Finally woke up and realized that he can't beat John Lynch and doesn't want to waste his time with a race he can't win, while having his hands tied behind his back by the board of alderman.

Another example of our benchless state (0.00 / 0)
There are no offices that provide a good launching pad for a major statewide run here. (Vermont and Massachusetts have them, e.g. Lieutenant Governor.)

Interesting. (0.00 / 0)
Last three successful candidates for governor:

Rich guy.  Rich guy.  State Senator.

Where did previous govs come from?  Anyone?  Rep. Splaine?

the Politicker NH story (4.00 / 1)
was interesting.

Joe Kenney will be going to Washington, DC to meet with potential supporters for his NH gubernatorial race?

What is wrong with this picture? And where's the $$? Kenney hasn't filed any campaign financial disclosure forms since 2006. It's hard to believe he hasn't started fundraising yet.
