Open Thread, Democratic Unity Edition

by: Douglas E. Lindner

Fri Jun 20, 2008 at 17:21:59 PM EDT

Several weeks after Senator Obama sowed up the nomination, it seems the time to say this:

Thank you, Senator Clinton.  Thank you, Senator Edwards, Governor Richardson, Senator Dodd, Senator Biden, and Congressman Kucinich.  Thank you, and thank you to all of your supporters.  Each of you has made unparalleled contributions to this country in your respective distinguished careers, and our party is stronger for each of your candidacies.  Don't disappear; your leadership and principle guide us still, even though you won't be President this year.

We had seven great candidates, each with legions of supporters, each with varying ideas about how to accomplish our common goals.  All seven are leaders we can believe in; all seven remain giants in our party and in the national discourse.

One of those seven will be the next President of the United States, and will bring about the change that all of these candidates and their supporters know we need.

Meanwhile, now that we have chosen our candidate, the Democratic Party at every level, including BlueHampshire, is at peace with itself, and unified in the cause of moving our nation forward, out of the national tragedy that the Bush Era has been.

We have an enormous task ahead of us, and we are finally facing it together.

This is an open thread.

End of 2nd Quarter - Act Blue (0.00 / 0)
The end of the quarter is near. We won't have another opportunity to drive the media narrative on this aspect of the campaign until October.

Please consider making your contribution by June 30th. This is a very important deadline.

Anyone see the Bradley-Stephen debate? (0.00 / 0)
Very different coverage from the UL and Foster's.

The UL: "a lively debate that was free of personal attacks."
Fosters: "The debate turned personal at points"

I hope we'll have some Hamsters covering the Republican debates for both CDs...

So THAT explains why (0.00 / 0)
the trademark Republican signs at Exit 16 on I-89 are no more.

That bus guy is selling his bus.

And this is fascinating: click on the Benson photos: did he have a license to drive a bus when he did that?

Wonder if Sununu's fired now.

Successful day for Young Democrats! (4.00 / 3)
Big props to the 100 NH Young Democrats who came to yesterday's NHYD BBQ (including BHers Doug Lindner & Andy Sylvia, and Young at-heart Democrat JonnyBBad).

It was really cool to meet the Obama Fellows, to listen to Lou D'Allesandro, and to hear from YDs Molly Shaheen & Kathleen Shea-Porter. Molly said she was told to expect 10-15 people ... she was thrilled by the big turnout. Activists and insiders alike are quickly realizing that NHYD is changing the game in 2008.

More than just food and speeches though, 14 YD state rep candidates received an informal training by NHDP, socialized, and networked w/each other and the numerous campaigns present ... NHYD expects to support over TWO DOZEN YOUNG DEMOCRATS running for state rep this year! (More info on this coming soon b/c these Young Dems will need Blue Hamster help)

The big story though - NH Young Democrats came out in force on a Saturday afternoon in June to support each other and our party. 20% of the 2008 NH electorate very plausibly could be young voters (18% alone in the primary).

We are networked. We are united. We are ready for change. Expect NHYD to be well-organized for victory in November.

Support the campaign to elect NH's Young Democrats:

Not to mention (4.00 / 1)
Ms.MaryBBad !

This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.

Obama & Clinton together in Unity, NH (4.00 / 2)

From Ben Smith

No symbolism too direct for a presidential campaign:

CHICAGO, IL— Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama announced today that they will hold a “Unite for Change” Rally this Friday in Unity, New Hampshire. Both candidates received exactly 107 votes in the western New Hampshire town in the primary.

Crack is Wack. (4.00 / 1)
Bummed about the Winehouse news.  I hope at least it keeps her away from the bad stuff, because it's rare I actually like a pop star's voice this much:

Wonder if Sununu's fired now.

Winehouse (0.00 / 0)
I don't really follow her -- with few exceptions, my musical interest ends around 1985 (am a vinyl boy).

Then again, my mother does want me to find a nice Jewish girl. . . .

Can't vouch for the "nice" (0.00 / 0)
but the other two work.  This is a clever mash-up to take you pre-85:

Happy St. Jean Baptiste Day! (4.00 / 1)
In the same way we celebrate St. Patrick's Day, today would be a good day to reflect on the contributions immigrants from Quebec have made to New Hampshire's heritage.

This year is the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec city by Samuel de Champlain in 1608, who is also credited with being the discoverer of New Hampshire, as I recall, on the caption of a painting in the lobby of the main branch of St. Mary's Bank in Manchester, N.H. (though this is probably pseudo-history reflecting our ancient claim on Vermont--I don't think he ventured this far southeast).

St. Mary's Bank, by the way, was the first credit union in the country. It was set up to extend credit to the French Canadian immigrant community in Manchester along Alphonse Desjardin's caisse populaire model.

New Hampshire also boasts, according to Wikipedia, "the highest percentage of residents of French/French-Canadian ancestry of any U.S. state."

If you needed an excuse to buy a case of Molson today, this one is just as good as any.
