Weekly Poll & Open thread

by: Dean Barker

Sun Jul 20, 2008 at 08:57:23 AM EDT

Here are the results of last week's poll:
The NH-01 Republican nominee will be:
* Jeb Bradley - 25 votes (55.56%)
* John Stephen - 20 votes (44.44%)
Total votes: 45
Most of those votes took place before the 2Q fundraising numbers.  Now that I know that Bradley has spent more than raised, has gone into more debt, and has essentially not shaken off Stephen's money haul, I regret my vote for him.  If turnout and enthusiasm are low enough, Stephen could very well pull this out, which is a shame, because I think, while both aren't really a match for Shea-Porter, Jeb is easier to beat.

This week's vote is on the Iraq news.  And let's make this an Open thread.

The only significant development (election-wise) that comes of Maliki's statement: (4.00 / 1)
It's a great talking point, and it should be repeated any time any Democrat mentions Iraq.

Talking point (0.00 / 0)
Flipping around this morning, I heard John Kerry being interviewed by Don Imus, and he made a point of bringing this up. He changed the subject to do it.

He was a weak Presidential candidate, but he's a good Senator and a good surrogate. (0.00 / 0)

"Whenever you see that three letter word, my friends, T-A-X, grab your hat and watch out." (4.00 / 2)
Who needs small government when you can pay for your unnecessary war with money borrowed from our geopolitical-economic competitors?

I'll take tax-and-spend over borrow-and-waste any day.

That quote was from McCain, speaking to GM employees in Michigan on Friday. (0.00 / 0)

Trolls, and rumors of trolls (4.00 / 1)
In order to keep my flatlander's license, I try to stay out of discussions and polls that are strictly New Hampshire topics.

But as a long-time poster/reader of Blue Hampshire, I'm begging you -- if you decide they're trolls, ban them.

Arguing with the opposition defeats the whole purpose. It's what we do with the rest of our lives.

The seductive counterargument is, "What, you only want people who agree with you?" No, and I think there's ample evidence that we have plenty of disagreements around here.

The occasional visiting troll is useful. They help to remind us why we do this. Resident trolls are corrosive. Click on any thread of any length on Blue Mass Group, and you'll see what I mean.

Couldn't agree more. (4.00 / 1)
Speaking as an old time ham radio operator, the standard rule was (and still is) always to completely ignore any station operator that came on the air during a conversation and engaged in abusive/argumentative/nutty behavior.  If you don't rise to the bait, they go away quickly, since the desired reaction is not achieved. If you engage, the Mark Twain rule of arguing with fools applies, and the foolishness perpetuates.

There is a big difference between respectful dialogue (even if there is disagreement!) and always insisting everyone must take your point of view just for the sake of being annoying.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool First Amendment zealot, but it doesn't mean I have to listen!

Also one more point: a major part of a troll's mission/strategy is to distract people from what they are trying to accomplish; just think how much energy could be put into getting out the vote, discussing candidates, etc. instead of wasting it debating some Tralfamadorian!

Heck, here I go wasting more time on this issue now!

It's time for a change and I need a nap. Or is it the other way around?
