Obama Speech in Berlin

by: Jennifer Daler

Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 15:55:29 PM EDT

I saw most of Obama's speech live on MSNBC. it was amazing to see him speak at the Siegesaule, with people stretching out to the Brandenburg Gate to hear him.

I lived in West Berlin a few years before the wall came down. When I was there, two walls and barbed wire (and God knows what else) were between those two points. Friedrichstrasse, one of the crossover points, was like a no man's land. Now, you'll be happy to know there's a Starbuck's there, among other things.

But enough of my nostalgia--the speech rocked. The people were with him. They were even waving American flags. They never do that. And we know they weren't US Foreign Service wokers

TPM has the speech's transcript.

Obama was basically healing the "you're with us or against us" mentality of the last eight years. He urged the Berliners and by extension Europeans in general, to work with the US to help end world poverty, terrorism, and all the other plagues of the present. He said it will take work and sacrifice. He said--hide your eyes if you're squeamish--America hasn't been perfect. Imagine!
Not perfect ! I'm sure McBush will jump all over that one after his lunch at a German restaurant in Ohio. Who schedules this guy's campaign, anyway?

I have very close ties to Germany and am very partial to Europe in general. Shhh, I even lived in France for a while.

We have to deliver NH blue up and down the ticket. That's all there is to it.

For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin...

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

Schmidt's Sausage Haus und Restaurant
in Ohio is just like being there!!!

A think we really have reched a point in the McCain campaign where it is impossible to tell the difference between an accident and an intent.

If you missed Senator Obama's speech today, watch it in its entirety. Soundbytes don't really do the speech justice:

My first reaction: "Wow, I can't wait for this guy to be President!"

Restoring the credibility of the United States abroad was one of my top priorities in picking a Presidential candidate, and I've come to the conclusion that there isn't a politician in America who could take office in 2009 and do it as quickly and effectively as Barack Obama--and I say this as someone who worked hard for and voted for someone else in the Primary.

Meanwhile, the idea that Americans working for the American government abroad are banned from attending a speech by a US Government official in their host country is absolutely BS.  Ambassadors are chosen for partisan hackery but professional foreign service workers can't even see a US Senator speak?  That's an incredibly cold and partisan abuse of power.  It wouldn't help Obama to have them there; of all the abuses of the Bush administration, this has got to be the most petty.

According to this morning's report (4.00 / 1)
from my youngest son, who has lived in southwestern Germany for several years: the natives (including my daughter-in-law) are quite pleased with Obama's recent stop in Deutschland. He says the post-visit discussions have been very positive, and they liked both content and presentation of his Berlin speech. Hardly a scientific sampling, but a little news from another area of the country some distance from Berlin.

Republicans believe government is bad - then they get into office and prove it.
