GOP Chairman Sununu is saying some awfully weird things these days

by: Michael Marsh

Sat Jun 27, 2009 at 09:29:00 AM EDT

(If by "awfully weird" you mean "laughably untrue"... - promoted by Dean Barker)

An interview with GOP Chairman Sununu was front-page "news" in the Portsmouth Herald on Friday. It was a trip to fantasy-ville, with the ex-Governor using the word "radical" 4 times when referring to the legislature. That's right: no income tax, no sales tax, no cap gains tax, no estate tax. But they're still a bunch of radicals.

The interview was further evidence, also, that its recent purchase by Rupert Murdoch has not been a great thing  for the Herald.

Here are a few of Sununu's bigger whoppers:

The state budget passed by the Legislature this week is a deliberate step by Democrats toward a state income tax.

Why? Cuz he said so, that's why! By way of "proof" he cites one member of the House "Appropriations and Ways and Means" committee who is pro-income tax. His staff needs to tell him that the committee dropped "Appropriations" from its name many years ago.

Passage of a same-sex marriage law is a kickback to "radical left groups" from out of state that funded Democrats' campaigns in 2006 and 2008....It was quid pro quo, said the GOP chairman, that the out-of-state, agenda-laden money went to the N.H. State Democratic Committee then to local Democratic candidates with the implicit expectation that a gay-marriage bill would be passed.

Got that, legislators? Your vote was purchased wholesale by out-of-staters, and you never knew! You thought you were voting in the great tradition of personal freedom we cherish here, and to end an obvious example of discrimination. I guess the joke's on you!

Michael Marsh :: GOP Chairman Sununu is saying some awfully weird things these days
The Democratic Party has been taken over by the radical left and nobody noticed.

Except Sununu, of course. The Unblinking Eye sees all.

Lynch is the worst governor in New Hampshire history. This governor is afraid of his Legislature.

Why?  He already answered this: Cuz he says so!

The budget puts more pressure on cities and towns, likely forcing them to raise property taxes.

Forget about the fact that the state is sending more money than ever to cities and towns despite the economy. By Sununu's idiosyncratic reckoning, more is less when it comes from Democrats.

Look, I know Sununu is the chairman of the opposition , and part of his job description is to lie about our party, but sheesh... what does he think when he looks in the mirror?

Do other Republicans get a little embarrassed when they read this sort of thing, or do they say something like, "hey, that's just John being John"?

Poll
Does John Sununu say this stuff because..
he is just old.
He is just old and grumpy.
He is old and grumpy and deranged.
He really, truly believes this stuff. Really!
He is a prevaricator.

Funny he should say that (4.00 / 1)
I don't know how many NH Reps would say they benefitted from the Coordinated Campaign.

Ohhhh John Pa... (4.00 / 1)
Ohhh John Pa.

"Passage of a same-sex marriage law is a kickback to "radical left groups" from out of state that funded Democrats' campaigns in 2006 and 2008....It was quid pro quo, said the GOP chairman, that the out-of-state, agenda-laden money went to the N.H. Funny, this John Pa Sununu guy is just paranoid.  No one, absolutely no one -- certainly not some out-of-state groups contributing to anyone, nor any in-state group, asked me or any of those cosponsoring House Bill 436 to put the bill in.  In fact, the plan of many advocates for marriage equality was that it wouldn't be introduced until 2011.  No one.  That's a fact.

So what John Pa is saying is just a myth (I'd call it a "lie" but that's a word I try not to use) made up by the far right and the Sununus of the world.

Marriage equality this year passed because of the people of New Hampshire.  Poor John Pa.  He must have trouble getting up in the morning.

I thought that was probably the case... (0.00 / 0)
.... but on the off-chance you had recieved a few million bucks from radical left-wing out-of-state agitators for doing their bidding, I was going to ask to borrow $20 next time I saw you!

Seriously, it was disappointing that the Herald didn't at least ask Sununu if he had the tiniest shred of evidence to back up this rather amazing charge, but the paper seems to have lapsed into the Steven Colbert system of journalism- they say it... you just write it down and print it.

Now that Sununu said this, we will be hearing it repeated by many different sources, quoting each other as evidence. Two years from now it will be accepted as common wisdom by the right that out-of-staters pushed their agenda on the people of this state.
