Barney Frank Rules Out a Senate Run

by: JimC

Thu Aug 27, 2009 at 10:22:37 AM EDT

Cross-posted from Blue News Tribune.

WBUR has the story here. The Senate race comes up near the end.

Interestingly, he said he would have run if John Kerry had been elected in 2004, because Democrats were then the minority. But now, he is a committee chair and is getting things done. Always the pragmatist.

This is a big deal. I think Barney would have been the frontrunner.

Always The Servant, Too... (4.00 / 3)
...and Barney Frank, while he'd be a great United States Senator, sure does excellent things in the House and I'm glad he'll hang in there.  He's been fantastic for working men and women, and of course of all types of equality issues.

When Barney came out, he says, (4.00 / 2)
Tip O'Neill was sad. "Barney, I always expected you to be the first Jewish Speaker."

I've never been sure whether Tip meant: "and now you'll never be speaker" or "Who the hell will bother to remember that Speaker Frank was Jewish?"

A small part of my excitement in Kerry's election in 2004... (4.00 / 2)
was the knowledge that Barney was going to seek the senate seat in the Spring '05 special election. I had already signed up to help his campaign...instead I ended up helping the NH senate Democrats win their majority in '06...all good in the end.

Democrats solve problems, Republicans sit and say no.

Markey doesn't have the same major power Barney Frank is currently exercising, and he's pretty darn good too.
I'll never forget when both Markey and Kennedy testified before the NRC against the Seabrook nuke licensing.
I was hoping for Barney, but Eddie will do nicely.

Markey is in his mid-60s, has over 30 years of seniority in the House, and is next in line to take over its most influential committee (Energy and Commerce).  He is also very tight with Speaker Pelosi.  I'd love either Frank or Markey, but am guessing that both will stay put rather than move to a low-seniority Senate post.

My money is on Rep. Mike Capuano -- a feisty leader with strong progressive bona fides on both domestic and foreign policy.  He's be great.  And, as an added benefit, Capuano would be the second Dartmouth Democrat added to the Senate (along with future Sen. Paul Hodes)!
