Iowa Pwns NOM, to the Tune of 90 Grand

by: Dean Barker

Remember all the money the National Organization for Marriage dumped into NH to try to stop marriage equality?

And remember how they vowed to make it a big issue in the next election cycle after their out-of-state hate was rejected?

Well, it looks like they tried to just that in Iowa, turning a state house race into a proxy battle over marriage equality.

They spent 90 grand (the source of which money continues to be a mystery) on TV ads.

And lost.

Words fail me, so instead, just:

Too much blather is like everything else, boring. n/t (0.00 / 0)

Won't they have fun running TV ads here? (4.00 / 1)
Go after a state rep from, say, Newport with an ad campaign on Channel 9? Do they spring for the Boston airtime too?

And have 99.75% of the viewers wondering, "Who the heck is this guy in Newport? And why should I care?"

Iowa and New Hampshire both have marriage equality, and it's here to stay.  These two states make the difference; the next time there's an open Democratic primary for President, most of the candidates, including the winner, will openly support marriage equality.

I say "openly" because, as has been reported, Obama supported marriage equality as a state senator and seems to have moderated his position to run for higher office.  Also, despite not technically being for marriage equality, he was against Prop 8.

Democrats solve problems, Republicans sit and say no.

According to the Des Moines Register's Kathie Obradhovich, who picked up the politics beat from David Yepsen,
Neither candidate stressed the issue and it's a stretch for anyone to portray this local race as any kind of referendum on gay marriage.

NOM's $86K investment in Republican loser Steve Burgmeier was definitely a shot across the bow of every other pro-equality Iowa candidate: We've got cash and we're not afraid to spend it, so back off.
A bigger issue in Curt Hanson's narrow victory may have been the Iowa economy, and how Gov. Chet Culver is handling the state's sagging fortunes. Obradovich says that the state GOP and right wing groups like Iowans for Tax Relief ran ads designed to attack Culver rather than supporting Burgmeier The GOP is targeting Iowa and former governor Terry Branstad is making noises about seeking another term.
