I Am Become Death

by: Dean Barker

Sun Oct 11, 2009 at 20:24:32 PM EDT

The heartbreaking, shocking tragedy of the Mont Vernon murder will make it tempting for lawmakers from that area to grandstand on the issue of capital punishment instead of delving into the more complex reasons of why something so awful could happen in the first place.

Will thoughtfulness and restraint be shown by our representatives in the face of such a horrendous crime?

One of the public servants representing Mont Vernon is Bill O'Brien.  His recent thoughts on the assisted suicide bill:

Rep. William O'Brien, R-Mont Vernon, said the bill sets up "death panels" that administer what he called "death doses," and asked Weed whether their use should be limited to "death centers."

So, no.

Maybe Gorky Park? (0.00 / 0)
There's a scene in some book I read years ago, where the character responds to the standard cant of his party.

"Will the Party solve the problem of the child run over by a car?" Th bureaucrats scowl and say Yes.

I am a proud Democrat. My party, my beliefs, could not have prevented the Mont Vernon tragedy.

Conservatives seem to be totally convinced that (0.00 / 0)
punishing one person will persuade others to desist from whatever negative action is being punished.  While this belief is consistent with their commitment to the notion that all behavior is reactive and that the right message (public relations) will produce right behavior, their own recurrent resistance to the blandishments of the current chief executive should reveal the error of this thinking to them.

Since they refuse to see it, it seems fair to conclude that conservatives are simply enamored of pontificating, of spouting hot air and of liking to hear themselves natter.

"Nattering nabobs of negativism" was never more apt than in reference to the party of "no."

I wish they would just read the bill... (0.00 / 0)
This bill, unlike the federal health care legislation, is a mere eight or nine pages long.  And there is no sign of a death panel or a death center anywhere in it.  The bill is purely intended to be about individual choices, and ensures that no one can make these decisions for another.

But of course, if they actually read the bill, they might have to talk about substance, rather than taking to the grandstand....

I should have made it clear (0.00 / 0)
...that the bill to which I was referring was HB 304, the assisted suicide bill, in answer to the quoted from Rep. O'Brien.

Won't you spare me over? (0.00 / 0)
