KUSTER and DeJOIE Hussle to Monadnock Country after Concord

by: kdhalloran

Wed Oct 21, 2009 at 04:05:32 AM EDT

Ann McLane Kuster and John DeJoie, Democratic candidates for Congress for NH-2, did a great job last night introducing themselves to 50 people present at Democratic Town Committee in Jaffrey, NH. Each hussled 50 miles down from the NHDP HQ meeting earlier in the evening in Concord, and each gave very distinct and strong presentations. Good candidates - we're lucky to have them.

Annie stressed her family's generational New Hampshire roots and lifelong commitment to public service, her career as family law attorney and health care advocate, as well as her own personal experience with her own mother's struggle to come to terms with Alzheimer's with whom she wrote a book with her about their shared experience. She demonstrated deep knowledge of the Health Care issues and options gripping Washington right now, as well as other human rights issues including the breaking developments in Afghanistan.

John stressed his working class roots growing up in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood and later a surrounding suburb, and his evolution from a graduate degree to human services director to hands-on firefighter. He shared his experience in introducing and passing Michelle's law in the NH Legislature against fierce opposition against from insurance companies and the unanimous passage in the House and Senate, and his commitment to incremental bi-partisanship in law-making even in these polarized political climate and times.

We were all impressed with their approachability, energy, passion and compassion for people, and decency.  Regardless of who wins or loses the Democratic nomination, we will all be winners.

9. Pete Rose - Charlie Hustle

His nickname was created by Mickey Mantle. During spring training of 1963, the New York Yankees were playing the Cincinnati Reds. Pete Rose, a rookie at the time, was taking batting practice with Mantle looking on. After his final practice swing drove a ball into center field, Rose took off down the first base line as if the game had already started. Mantle, for his wisecracking attitude, yelled over to Rose very loudly, "Boy, you're a real Charlie Hustle, ain't ya?"

and it stuck

Good movie, and apparently pretty factual. Not great, but much better than, say, Mr. Saturday Night.

I lived it. (4.00 / 1)
Sat in right field bleachers waiting for Maris to hit to me but he never did.Saw the Tigers(Kaline and Cash, Lolich), Orioles...(Brooks Robinson)Senators w/(Killibrew)then became Twins in '61. We never went to a Red Sox game...they weren't even on the radar. No haters here, just no competition in those days.
They would always fade. Until 1967...

Red Sox fans know 1967 as the season of the "Impossible Dream." The slogan refers to the hit song from the popular musical play "Man of La Mancha." 1967 saw one of the great pennant races in baseball history with four teams in the AL pennant race until almost the last game. The BoSox had finished the 1966 season in ninth place, but they found new life with Yastrzemski as the team went to the 1967 World Series. Yastrzemski won the American League Triple Crown (the most recent player to accomplish such a feat), hitting .326 with 44 home runs and 121 RBIs. He finished one vote short of a unanimous MVP selection, as a Minnesota sportswriter placed Twins center fielder César Tovar first on his ballot.[28] But the Red Sox lost the series - again to the St. Louis Cardinals, in seven games. Legendary pitcher Bob Gibson stymied the Red Sox winning three games.

We had a transistor on the bus and someone held it to the window as we came back from a HS soccer game. We all rooted for the Sox ! How could you not ? Its a game man, and they won the League title by being the best.Yaz was the man. But as they say. 'good pitching beats good hitting'. Gibson was perhaps the best big game pitcher of his era.

Are you advocating Boston turn in the 04 and 07 trophies due to 'No Mas' Papi and 'Its all about me' Manny taking the juice, or just bloviating from here to eternity? You never miss a chance to tear someone down, and hijack a thread that has nothing to do with YOU.

Emperor, I didn't "hijack" a thread -- I responded to your comments about baseball with truthful representations of A-Fraud's pharmaceutical escapades.  No harm there.

Big Papi never did anabolic steroids.  (He's fat, not muscled.)  Papi took over-the-counter Dominican nutritional supplements, which -- like everything else in that country -- are completely unregulated.  Unlike A-Fraud, he answered questions about this openly and without apology.

3-0.

his commitment to incremental bi-partisanship

Friendly advice.

I mean that's John's decision, not mine ... I don work on his or Annie's staff (4.00 / 1)
... he talked about doing legislation incrementally, not "my way or the highway" and his strategy of always having at least one Republican sponsor in legislation he files was controversial in the meeting and stimulated a question given the impossible current partisan climate.  So what do you mean by "the enclaves" ???

Innocent Bystander (0.00 / 0)
KD,
I was talking past you, sorry.

The enclave reference goes back a ways. It's, elwood if I may be so bold, simultaneously an affirmation of the bluing of NH, while concurrently pushing back on a somewhat Manchester centric vision of NH politics.

Keene Sentinel on Annie & John in Jaffrey last night (4.00 / 1)
From today's Keene Sentinel - http://sentinelsource.com/arti...

Kuster supports a public option. (0.00 / 0)
Kuster said she is "passionately pro-choice," supports a public health-care option "with affordable access for all, but not at any cost, or we'll all go broke," and stressed the environmental and strategic importance of energy independence.

It better be over before Annie gets to DC, but it is good to see her state her convictions.

Paper mangled Annie's statement on Health Care Reform (0.00 / 0)
"... affordable access for all, but not at any cost, or we'll all go broke" makes no sense.

We're already going broke - hence Annie's principled stand on 1)the right to affordable health care for all and 2) an public option to drive down health insurance costs ... that's what Annie stands for ...

Bi-Partisanship and John DeJoie (4.00 / 2)
If you read the Sentinel article DeJoie's statement regarding bi-partisanship was a little different then stated above.

According to the Sentinel report...
"DeJoie and Kuster each described themselves as bipartisan.

DeJoie noted the Democrats were the overwhelming minority in the Statehouse when he arrived there.

"You want to talk about having to work across the aisle - you couldn't accomplish anything without getting Republicans on board," DeJoie said.

He pointed to the signing into law in 2005 of the state version of Michelle's Law, which extended health insurance coverage for college students who need to take medical leaves of absence and previously were required to remain in school to stay covered.

A similar bill was recently signed into law at the federal level.

"This is an indication of what we can all do when we all work together," DeJoie said.

"Republicans have good ideas now and then," he said. "But being bipartisan means also having the strength and the convictions to know when to dig in your heels and say, 'I would rather have this bill die than become a shell of what it was.' "

I don't believe DeJoie is planning to work only incremently to accopmlish things such as healthcare reform.

Early Dump (0.00 / 0)
It's hard to say, health care reform being what it is these days, but the "B" word may not play well in the primary. No matter who uses it.

I'm a moderate/centrist type, so I eat this stuff up. Not sure how far centrism will fly in 2010, especially in a contested primary.

Well, the quotes are out there for the post primary pivot.

It's an interesting question - (4.00 / 4)
amplified by our "join-vote-quit" primary rules that let independents play the field. The calculation may be different here than in many states.

Worth a diary and thread sometime.

I was there --- I heard him. He makes sense in NH, but DC ??? (0.00 / 0)
You comments are correct vis a vis his statement that bi-partisanship has its limits, and he made sense on that point.  But he also explained why Michelle's law in NH is still very restrictive - that is, a 12 month window for a child under 26 who becomes gravely ill and will got be required to be a full time student.  12 months for a young person with cancer is NOT a lot of time - and believe me, these insurance companies will be waiting on the day after the 365 days to CANCEL the insurance REGARDLESS of the prognosis. John talked WHY they took the bill instead of rejecting it as insufficient because "the more fair and comprehensive the qualifications for continued coverage, the more objections and obstacles that block the way to reform."  Also reasonable - to a point.  CONGRESS is a different environment than NH, and in these days and for those of us who voted for "Change we can believe in" and the obstructionist "PARTY OF NO!" this "incremental bi-partisanship" has its limits in the wake of "Dont Ask Don't Tell" and  DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act).  Principles and People matter more than policies and parties.  We shall see which champion - the Fearless Fire Fighter and the Resolute Family Advocate triumphs.  In fact, I hope they both do!
