For Whom the Straw Polls...

by: Mike Hoefer

Mon Apr 11, 2011 at 17:04:26 PM EDT

(First polls coming Friday, Get your nominations in. - promoted by Mike Hoefer)

I am going to put three comments in this thread to allow folks to nominate names we should include in straw polling for Gov, NH-01, and NH-02.

Governor Lynch is polling strongly and could be considering a historic 5th term, but for the sake of this polling we'll assume he is not.

Ann Kuster has announced (much to the relief of folks like me who have not removed their bumper stickers!) that she will run again in NH-02, but are there any other folks we should poll there?

NH-01 could be very interesting with Guinta's weak numbers (-7 favorability) and an open Dem seat. Whom should we poll for that race?

Please let us know who we should include. Wannabees get your mail lists ready!

If you are not going to include Gov. Lynch, please put in an other category so I have a place to vote.

I think there should be two rounds (0.00 / 0)
One that includes Governor Lynch, one that doesn't. I'd support him if he runs, but I'm for thinking about what happens if he doesn't.

My exclusion was not meant as a slight (0.00 / 0)
or disrespect toward Gov Lynch in the least.

Perhaps the actual poll question will read... "Assuming Gov. John Lynch does not run for reelection who would you support for Governor if the Democratic Primary were held today?"

Would that allow you to participate with clean conscious?

I didn't think it was a slight. (0.00 / 0)

literally true (0.00 / 0)
The Constitution does say you have to be 30 at the time you are inaugurated.  So Mike won't be old enough as of January 2013.

On a happier note, DJ Bettencourt is only a few months older than Mike.

I suspect that DJ won't be a successful candidate for higher office... (4.00 / 2)

Only want to nominate/include if the grassroots are excited about people. Yes I could have trotted out the assumed names, but this way its a bit more real... If you want your name on on the list you better get a supporter to add it for you!

I must have been distracted... (0.00 / 0)
...when you were singing the praises of Peter Sullivan and Carol Shea-Porter that day.

But water under the bridge, yada yada.

My point is just that the folks entrusted to know enough about political talent to have their favored -- and sometimes seemingly hand-picked -- candidate be accepted by national politicians (and journalists) as the sole "real" Democratic candidate are from time to time significantly mistaken in their judgments.

Hell, I trusted that Obama's judgment that Rahm met the job requirements for Chief of Staff was well-informed and correct. That didn't work out so well.

(And zero enmity toward you, too, of course.)

Tim, it appears you were distracted... (0.00 / 0)
or you would have realized that the Breakfast is an annual roast of a prominent Manchester Democrat. Jim had announced that he was retiring as the House Democratic Leader and was chosen for the 'honor'.  Kathy was a roaster, and as I recall it, she 'roasted' him very well.

DeJoie & Swett (0.00 / 0)
John DeJoie shows up at the State House on occasion but he says he is not running for anything at the moment, not even his old NH House seat.  I hope he comes back to the NH House.  Katrina Swett has been keeping a low profile: her US House campaign did not go well at all.

I would certainly include Mark Fernald on my short list, he's been more active of late (although he doesn't blog, to the best of my knowledge).

I wouldn't mind seeing Molly on that list either...

If anyone should be proposing alternatives to Annie, it's me. And I'm not. That should tell you something.

Is Annie our best possible candidate against Charlie? Maybe, maybe not. But barring some sort of dramatic sea change, she has the nomination locked up. And she's infinitely better than Charlie Bass.

So let's avoid picking old scabs (yes, that means you, Jack) and move forward.

Argument in favor of primaries (4.00 / 2)
I love CSP and Annie Kuster, but would they both be better served by primaries (the DCCC can now call and yell at me)?.

Paul Hodes was hurt by the lack of a primary.  When Mark Connelly talked about jumping in late, I objected, because I thought it would hurt Paul financially. Well, that didn't work out so well, did it (see Jim Splaine, I can admit when I am wrong!). Because of all the primaries on the Republican side (congressional, senate and gubernatorial), the Republican message dominated, and that hurt us in November.  Probably still would have gotten our heads handed to us, but maybe not so badly.

Annie Kuster was a better candidate because of her primary.

Yes, I have traditionally hated primaries, but a lot of that is because as party chair, I hated having to listen to candidates, their staffs and supporters complain about each other over the stupidest stuff. Seriously, you haven't lived until some camapaign manager off his meds starts screaming about how come so and so has better sign placement at a state convention. Whatever. And the idea of incumbents being primaried still makes me nauseous. But, given that congressional candidates will be fighting for coverage this year due to the presidential race, would we be better off with healthy, competitive primaries that will attract press attention?

I hated having to listen to candidates, their staffs and supporters complain about each other over the stupidest stuff. Seriously, you haven't lived until some camapaign manager off his (or her) meds starts screaming about how come so and so has better sign placement at a state convention (or their seat was further from the stage, or a million other silly reasons). Whatever

[ Parent ]
I suspect for most of us our first thought (0.00 / 0)
on primaries is NO, but we have such a short window after the primary for people to get to know the candidates and a press that is always looking for the fight (I can't believe anyone would be interested in the truly awful GOP Presidential field if there weren't a bunch of them to cover and get paid).  We aren't going to win the money game unless a miracle happens and Congress passes disclosure laws.  Primaries will get the names of the candidates out there, get them attention over a long enough period of time that they will have some name recognition.  And it gives us more people to point out how truly awful the GOP guys who got elected in 2010 are.
I love Carol and want her to be my candidate.  But I also want her to have a great chance to win, and a primary might be that thing that makes a big difference.  A big win would be so sweet!

[ Parent ]
And lots of candidates (0.00 / 0)
stepping forward are a signal to the other side that there are a lot of us just waiting for a chance to take them on!
