On television this AM they didn't mention that fact when they gave the results from Dixville.  They did say that historically, the winner in Dixville has become the president, however, which would mean I guess that Obama wins in 2012.

Why does Dixville Notch always go first? They get all the media attention for the first few hours! They're not representative of the rest of New Hampshire! It's not fair!

Since their ability to do this is based on getting everyone registered to vote, so they can close the polls, I propose this simple dKos inspired system!

On primary years ending on zero or 4, everyone from Nashua can vote between 12 and 1 a.m.

On primary years ending in 2 or 8, everyone from Manchester can vote between 12 and 1 a.m.

On primary years ending in a zero and can be Dixville Notch.

This will make everyone happy...it's so much more reasonable than our current arbitrary and archaic system, and I'm sure everyone will accept it.

I voted at 7:40 in Ward 8, Manchester. There were two people holding signs, both for Ron Paul. Four years ago, when I voted, it was crazy, the number of people holding signs for candidates.

And here's the thing: Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts.  Where are the busloads of volunteers from Massachusetts? Four years ago, there were busloads of people coming in from out of state to volunteer for Hillary Clinton, and I know it was similar for Barack Obama. Yes, gotv phone banks are the first priority, but a frontrunner from a neighboring state should have more than enough people to work the phones and do poll visibility at high turnout locations.  
Will be interested in hearing what other people are seeing.

Ward Five usually has the highest turnout in Keene so the campaigns always make sure signs and people are stationed there. Maybe the Romney people in Keene think he has it all sown up.

Thanks, Mike for your on the ground reporting from Keene. I miss it.

Concord Ward 1 (4.00 / 3)
One person holding a Ron Paul sign and two Huntsman signs in the ground.  That was at 8:10 AM.

Oh, when I got my ballot (Registered Democrat) the lady behind the table goes, "You may also choose to write in who ever you want."  I replied, "No, the person I'm voting for is on my ballot," smiled and went into the booth.

But do they always say that in your ward, or is this something new?  It seems off to me that an election workeer would be giving helpful hints on write ins.

...unless a voter asks.  It's clear on the ballot you can do write-ins if you wish.  You should call the Secretary of State's Office and inform them:  603 271-3242.

No, Attorney General, not SoS, but call the Obama hotline (4.00 / 2)
The Attorney General is responsible for the enforcement of the election laws, not the Secretary of State. The AG has its election lawyers all set up on election day. But, please, call the Obama hotline. There are voter protection lawyers on call all day at OFA. They have this down to a science.

Jim, I agree that the SoS office is a fountain of information and knows how to run elections, but on election day, when election law questions come up, the AG's office is staffed up to handle all this.

...so either is okay, but this is also an education issue for future campaigns so the SoS needs to emphasize during their trainings for election officials what they can, and CANNOT, do.  Though the AG handles immediate problems.

I was impressed today while at a polling location in Portsmouth that a representative of the AG's office came by and talked with those holding signs -- just three of us for Obama and one from the Occupy NH group -- telling us where we could and couldn't stand.  He was professional and kind, and clear.  Nice job.

My polling place was empty too. Oh, except for a fellow Dem I bumped into.

10 votes for Obama, 5 for Romney; 4 for Paul; 2 for Huntsman; 1 for Gingrich and 1 for Perry.

The GOP vote is really split. Perry didn't even rate 1 vote in Dixville, and that Mitt and Huntsman were tied in Dixville is also interesting.

I was part of Occupy the Primary in Dixville last night. Being there for the midnight vote was exciting. What a circus! Ten reporters for every reporter.

The O'Brien legislature's voter suppression campaign has confused many potential voters and some local officials, too. If you encounter any examples of voters being forced to produce photo IDs or turned away from registering because they didn't have their passport with them, please call the OFA hotline at 800-311-8683 with as many specific details as possible! Limiting the electorate is a a key component of the bad guys' 2012 election plan. Trymaine Lee has a good wrap up on the on-going New Hampshire photo ID on the Huffington Post site. Note especially the NH League of Women Voters report on how city and town government websites across New Hampshire often give erroneous or incomplete voter registration information.

   One person holding a Huntsmann sign, another holding a Ron Paul sign and then ..... a Ron Paul rap song coming from a boombox (which made me quicken my pace just a tad).

  Otherwise ..... that was it. Some people chatting with the sign-bearers, but nuttin' else.

I cast ballot #417.  Outside--no visibility.  One Rick Perry sign trying to stay up.

Eerily, no yard signs either--only my neighbor across the street who has one sign for each R that's running...perhaps he's having a hard time deciding.

Light turnout (I was #367) in heavily Democratic Portsmouth Ward 2. Sen. Martha Fuller Clark was holding a homemade sign for Obama. No sign of any known Republicans.

slow in Durham (0.00 / 0)
Very slow in Durham netween 9:45 and 1:30: it reminded me of a school district election.  The Republicans' turnout is a little higher than the Democrats, but not that much.  However, the Undeclareds are going for the Republicans by about 5 to 1.

I got see a few filled-out ballots because the moderators had to empty the box at one point nd I observed them.  My very subjective impression was that there were more Ron Pauls and Jon Huntsmans than I was expecting and fewer Mitt Romneys.

The big issue in Durham this winter is the Town Library: there will (almost certainly) be a bond vote on the proposed new library in March at the municipal elections.  At least one voter asked why it wasn't on today's ballot.

The 5 to 1 is to be expected.  This is being cast as a Republican primary and many in the media have/will ignore the fact that the president is even getting votes today.

I'm not worried about independent voters today, especially if they aren't voting for Romney.

2pm: One shivering man doing jumping jacks @entrance to parking lot with sign for Ron Paul. No one else other than CNN exit-poll-er. Their form surprised me. There was no place to say you'd voted Democratic. All questions were about R's.

But the story should be in there about the Democratic side.

Portsmouth: The Dems And Obama Organization... (0.00 / 0)
...have done great showing enthusiasm for President Obama by having polls covered.  Three wards I noticed had two and even three standing with Obama signs, and only one ward had a Republican -- for Romney.  I heard that in Rye this morning, there was an Obama sign-holder and someone from Occupy NH, plus a Romney supporter for an hour or so.  

Those Republicans who are voting are seeing that their neighbors support the President, and at best whichever Republican "wins" today will get about 35-40% of the vote.  So we can get some of those other 60-65% of Republicans to support Obama in November.

At the ward I was standing with an Obama sign for two hours, I have to estimate that a good 50% of the voters -- including some Republicans I know -- gave thumbs-up or nods to Obama.

I know several Republicans who have said they won't vote in the primaries, they prefer for the field to be 'culled' and will vote in the general.

At 9:30 AM the scene was very quiet.  One sign holder for Ron Paul.  Nothing else.  No signs.  A couple of signs at the exit off the interstate, but not the general mess you usually see.

A lone Ron Paul totem leaning up against a Suburban.

When I arrived in Conway: half a dozen Obama supporters, 1 lone Ron Paulower, and 1 Huntsman. Also, 2 Occupiers. The two original Occupiers were replaced by 4 more.

One angry GOP woman yelling that we should occupy the White House, because "that's where the problem starts." It seems (in her mind) that Obama is responsible for Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, which (in her mind) are the source of all of our economic woes.

I was prepared for a heavy after-work crowd, but there were only a dozen or so voters in the the polls, I was in and out in about 3 minutes.

As Mike said earlier, FEEL the enthusiasm!

Hope for a return to sanity.

At the voter registration table where I worked today (4.00 / 4)
we noticed that some voter had left a pair of mittens behind.

I had them removed as obvious campaign material.
