Civil Rights Leaders Among Us

by: Dean Barker

Thu Jul 09, 2009 at 21:25:39 PM EDT

Really very awfully nice Civil Rights Leader Kevin Smith weighs in on the idea that New Hampshire could conceivably join Massachussetts in the lawsuit challenging DOMA:
"It is our sincere hope that Governor Lynch does not waste any more of the taxpayer's time and money on the issue of gay marriage...

..."It is quite amazing though how this Governor went from publically opposing gay marriage as recently as April and now continues to support the repeal of DOMA.  Perhaps this is another reason why his poll numbers have plummeted in the last few months - his word simply cannot be trusted."

Of course, it is quite amazing - to the point of incredulity, really - how someone so focused on defeating HB436 could not know that Lynch has long talked about the unfairness of DOMA in reference to NH's marriage equality. It makes you wonder if Smith's words can be trusted. And funny how a civil rights leader such as he would be so opposed to the civil rights of gays and lesbians in the first place.

But maybe I'm overthinking it.  Maybe it's just that he's an instinctively partisan, career paid political operative.  I get it: he doesn't like Lynch, but he just loved Craig Benson:

Finally, Gov. Benson, the elves know I'm your number one fan,
Your legacy shall live in New Hampshire lore;
They've carved out your profile to replace the Old Man."

It is our personal hope (4.00 / 3)
that Messrs. Smith either stop speaking in the royal 'we' or the gentlemen sanctify things and marry themself.

is that Christmas song (0.00 / 0)
on tape?

We would enjoy that, immensely.

Make our day, Kev (0.00 / 0)
Perhaps this is another reason why his poll numbers have plummeted in the last few months - his word simply cannot be trusted.

Is that why the NH GOP hasn't been able to find an even remotely competent candidate to run against Gov. Lynch in the last five years?  Yup, that's the ticket.

That quoted statement deserves a "speak for yourself, Steve" reply. (0.00 / 0)
That said, civil rights are actually the obligations of citizens to participate in governing--i.e. refer to their relationship to the state.  The reason they're called rights and not obligations is probably because, in a free society, that participation is not coerced.  Freeloaders are tolerated.
Personal relationships, which are totally independent of citizenship, are based on human rights, which the agents of government are mandated to respect and recognize.  The ability to speak is god-given; that it is not to be interfered with is a Constitutional mandate.  Of course, the Constitution only applies to the agents of government.
Perhaps if we made media corporations quasi-government agents, we could make it apply to them, too.

And what would be their motivation to do that? (0.00 / 0)
They won on four out of five of their favorite things - death penalty, transgender bill, seat belts, medical marijuana (so far). Losing only on gay marriage which no Republicanic wants to eliminate as a campaign issue any way. The income tax is again stuck behind Lynch's pledge, services are cut, teachers are going to be laid off, if it weren't for the stimulus money this would be hailed as a magnificent time for Republicanics. They get to keep their issues going, call Lynch "Flynch," and allow the economy to keep down all those upstart serfs. Housing in the toilet, not tax on capital gains or estate tax. What's not to like? Blame it on the party in power (Dems) and get your agenda. Purrrrfect.

Poor John Lynch (4.00 / 1)
His approval rating has plummeted to 70%. It's probably pretty hurtful to him when Mr. Smith points out how far he's fallen!

First, if it's a waste of money to talk about it, then stop. (0.00 / 0)
Second, both sides of the issue of gay rights surely feel strongly enough about it that whatever small amount of money is involved in the legal debate is irrelevant.

And third, maybe Kevin Smith should learn from the other Kevin Smith and play Silent Bob for a while.
