Basic Campaign Discipline

by: Dean Barker

Fri Jul 24, 2009 at 14:52:45 PM EDT

Look, I'm no one and nobody, working and volunteering on no campaign, and even I have the wits about me to know that you don't leak confidential campaign memos.

Even though there's nothing in it you wouldn't already know from following the senate race on BH, this is a stupid, unforced error.

In anticipation of the teevee ad K Street Team Ayotte will make claiming that Hodes thinks she's a "good prosecutor," here is the phrase in full context:

Though Ayotte has built a positive profile as a good prosecutor, her name recognition is still lower than Paul's.
A campaign manager writing that Ayotte has a profile as a good prosecutor is just that - a description of a public image.  The truth of her actual record as prosecutor is not addressed.

Discipline, people.  Judd's been getting his way with us for decades.  We don't need him dictating his successor too.  This state's representation in the US Senate is too important for that.

The Memo Will Remain Confidential... (4.00 / 1)
If I can't access James Pindell's super ultra secret login protected website! :-(

Even though I signed up, I still can't access it for some reason...please please please just make it free!

Speaking of websites, is it just me or is AyotteForSenate.com owned by a politician in Portugal.

Looks like Dr. Brito Camara has a few other websites registered to his name, including one online trading website.

Probably nothing...just wondering...

I Rescind My Criticism! (4.00 / 3)
I just received an email from Mr. Pindell with my correct account information. Looks like I forgot to confirm my account. Oops.

Thanks! I appreciate it. That's really impressive service.

Supporter Betrayal (4.00 / 3)
This is ridiculous - not the e mail, but that someone felt such a need to be perceived as "in the know" that s/he would forward something marked confidential to a reporter.

How disloyal; putting your own need to prove to a reporter that you are part of some in crowd ahead of the confidentiality request of the sender.

Blech. People like this make me really crazy.

However, this memo does not contain any sort of secret super strategy, so no harm no foul, other than now we all know that one of Pindell's sources is an egocentrical dope.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

It also feeds into the 'journalism' of gossiip and gotcha that too often takes the place of investigative reporting. and diverts attention from issues that really matter. (4.00 / 2)

As KS says, in substance this is meaningless, but it is revealing of the seductive power of access that works two ways in reporting. People who are serious about effecting change, as opposed to being on an ego joyride, will resist the temptations.

If there were anything in a memo that could be said to be in the public interest to release it would be a different, and more complex, matter, but giving out an internal memo solely for ego gratification  is really either despicable or incredibly thoughtless.

Hopefully it is the latter and a lesson has been learned.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.
