Flashback: Pre-Candidate Obama in Portsmouth

by: Dean Barker

Mon Aug 10, 2009 at 22:55:57 PM EDT

I'm so old I remember when Obama went to Portsmouth before he was even a candidate.  Have fun with these gearing-up-for-the-primary flashbacks I found (and if you remember others, please post a link in the comments).  The comment threads are as funny as the initial impressions.

I give Scoonie the prize for this 12/08/06 comment:
In my opinion, Obama is the only Democrat who can beat John McCain. We need to embrace him.
Although, towards the end, I kind of think a bunch of our candidates could have beaten McCain.

And as a bonus, here's Candidate Obama in Portsmouth again (with then Mayor Steve Marchand) in October 2007: At the Obama Energy Event (Live!)

Thanks!

I am proud to say that I was a very early Obama supporter. I will be the first to admit that I'm no insider and not the most knowledgeable guy in the world. On the other hand, I am very good at political predictions and accurately assessing the mood of the general populace. MY predictions have all pretty much been spot on the past two elections.

I will say that I was definitely wrong when I said that Hillary Clinton couldn't beat John McCain. She also would've won, but it would've been much closer. But I was right that Obama was clearly our strongest candidate.

You also warned us of the Giuliani juggernaut (4.00 / 1)
so don't get too cocky!

I wear that humility as well (0.00 / 0)
Truth be told, I'm still puzzled by the Rudy fizzle. It just seems impossible that he could be that inept. Fred Thompson, OK, that was more predictable, but Rudy won twice in one of America's most Democratic cities. I guess cross-over appeal is less appealing in the GOP -- witness McCain's early struggles.

The Mayoralty is a great steppingstone (0.00 / 0)
It provides high visibility and name recognition, it provides a solid base.

The only problem with this steppingstone is, it doesn't lead to any new stone.

Ask Presidents Lindsay and Yorty.

I'd rather ask Jimmy Walker (4.00 / 1)
"Who'd want to be president when you can be mayor of New York?"

"Although, towards the end, I kind of think a bunch of our candidates could have beaten McCain" (0.00 / 0)
No, they couldn't have.  Because Obama beat them.  This is one of the things I like most about American democracy that differs from other large western democracies.  We may only have two parties, but every four years we get to hollow them out and more or less start over.  There's a reason Brits love The West Wing so much (and a reason we do too).

Ah, memory lane (0.00 / 0)
Howie Carr called New Hampshire "Blue Hampshire?" A badge of honor. He only insults ... well, he insults a lot of people, but some of my best friends.
