A Gay Boycott of the DNC & OFA?

by: Dubious MindBomb

Wed Nov 18, 2009 at 10:50:46 AM EST

"It is not enough to look back in wonder at how far we have come; those who came before us did not strike a blow against injustice only so that we would allow injustice to fester in our time. That means removing the barriers of prejudice and misunderstanding that still exist in America."
- Democratic Party Platform, 2008

On Monday, November 9, 2009, on Americablog and Americablog Gay, John Aravosis & Joe Sudbay, launched a boycott (temporary hopefully) against the Democratic National Commitee, Organizing For America, and the Obama re-election campaign. They have been joined by:

Daily Kos
Jane Hamsher (FireDogLake)
Dan Savage (The Stranger & Slog)
Michelangelo Signorile (Sirius OutQ & Gist)
David Mixner
Andy Towle & Michael Goff (TowleRoad)
Paul Sousa (Founder, Equal Rep)
Pam Spaulding (Pam's House Blend)
Robin Tyler (ED, Equality Campaign, Inc.)
Bill Browning (Bilerico Project)

Their reasoning:

President Obama promised to be a "fierce advocate" for LGBT Americans.  But while making modest progress on a scant few issues, on the major campaign promises made to our community, the President and the Democratic party have failed to keep their commitments.

There has been little, if any, pressure from the White House for votes on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).  The administration continues to send mixed signals on the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT).  And we've been told not to expect the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to even be considered until President Obama's second term.  In the last two weeks alone, we were angered that the Obama administration continued to defend DOMA in the courts -- last June, the administration's lawyers even compared loving gay relationships to incest and pedophilia -- and we were saddened that the White House and the Democratic party refused to help us defeat anti-gay ballot initiatives in Maine and Washington state.  LGBT Americans, our families, and our friends kept our promise at the ballot box, we now expect President Obama to keep his in the White House.

Until the Democratic Congress passes, and President Obama signs, legislation enacting ENDA, repealing DADT, and repealing DOMA, we ask you to join us in pledging to postpone contributions to the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America, and the Obama campaign.

I don't usually do this kind of thing, join boycotts or promote them, yet I have been feeling such frustration over the national Dems and the Obama administration's handling of gay issues (beginning with the inauguration) I just had to do something.

Last Friday I posted on my blog, Dubious MindBomb Internet Radio, my feelings and concerns over the boycott being called for by Americablog's John Aravosis and Joe Sudbay. John and Joe (who was raised in Maine) worked tirelessly on Maine's No on 1 campaign! They have blogged about it constantly and raised thousands in support of "No on 1" (through Americablog and Americablog Gay). They even live-blogged from Portland on election night

The failure of Obama (or his administration) to even mention support for the civil rights effort in Maine and the DNC's failure to support it financially or to even it mention it in get out the vote e-mails (sent out on election day), were the final straws for them and should be for us! Unfortunately, there is much, much more...

I would love for you all to take a look at it, follow the links & weigh it carefully, and then join me in signing the pledge not to support (temporarily) the DNC, OFA, or the Obama campaign financially.

Turn off the gAyTM? I say, "Yes"!

This was a hard step for me to take...My blog is there, primarily, in support of my Internet Radio Station, "Dubious MindBomb", and not political action.

So please give it a read and let's stop the national politicians from taking our money with one hand and slapping us in the face with the other!

I'm with Marcos ... (0.00 / 1)
... and enough with John Sununu's silence.
What I want to know it, why is RAY silent?

Party role (4.00 / 4)
The role of a party chair is to elect Democrats and to support elected Democratic officials.  When I was chair I often disagreed with elected Democratic officials, but I voluntarily gave up my right to say so publicly when I became chair.

I have never heard you be silent on anything important, Kathy. (0.00 / 0)

of course (4.00 / 1)

Troll rating for mis-information (3.43 / 7)
If you think that Ray Buckley has been "silent" on the need for civil rights for gay Americans, you certainly haven't been reading this blog for very long.

I am NOT with Marcos.  This President has repealed the travel ban for foreigners with HIV, and has publicly committed to reversing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" after he pushes through the most massive and transformational health care reform in 45 years.

I voted for a progressive president, and I got one.  In order for him to be an EFFECTIVE President, however, he must sequence his battles to avoid dissipating his political strength and the public's attention.  The Obama Administration is focusing on the most important fight first -- health care -- and has committed to subsequent public action across the board on progressive issues, including gay rights.

NO. (0.00 / 0)
Not while HUNDREDS of servicemen continue to be fired by the military.  Justice delayed his no justice. Process and policy are no substitute for principles.  NO MORE FANCY WHITE HOUSE DINNERS.  I don't like the Kool-Aid.

No more fancy White House Dinners? (4.00 / 2)
Why?  Does having more people in the room when the President dines delay justice?

What would you expect Ray to say?

See above. (0.00 / 0)
SOMETHING is better than nothing - and I think he knows it now, and he is feeling it.  If not, say so.

[ Parent ]
not always (4.00 / 2)
for example - you would do right by some of the issues you support by not saying anything at all...

Too extreme too early. (4.00 / 6)
And the Matthew Shepard Act is not nothing.

If not now...when? (4.00 / 4)
How is it "extreme" to hold our elected officials accountable to us for the promises made during an election?

Is is to "early" for millions of Americans to demand their equitable civil rights?

I don't think so...We won't hold these sizable leads in the Congress for ever. I feel that know is the time...

I agree about the Hate Crimes legislation that passed...It is not nothing and that's not what I was claiming but remember it took 12 years to get it passed.

Good points (4.00 / 1)
I would add, for most of those years, the GOP controlled Congress.

[ Parent ]
It's too early in this administration to boycott it because not all major promises are already fulfilled. (0.00 / 0)

It so often comes down to a lesser of two evils (4.00 / 1)
I think the question is:

Do we do more harm by not loudly pushing the President to act on what he claimed his agenda was?

or

Do we do more harm by attacking those on our own side when we should be covering their flank from attacks by the other side.

Tricky balancing act.

The irony of the Matthew Shepard/James Byrd Act is... (0.00 / 0)

Congress attached a $680-billion measure outlining the Pentagon's budget, which includes $130 billion for ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. No wonder Russ Feingold didn't support it. War is a hate crime too. I'll stand by that.

I'm glad that a hate crimes measure was passed and I don't discredit those who worked that so hard to get it passed. But adding something like that to the bill goes against the meaning of the bill and the legacy of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd. How does it not?

Chris Hedges wrote a great article on this irony. Check it out.

Mixed feelings (4.00 / 1)
1. Money talks.

2. We don't do a good enough job holding leaders accountable.

3. Sorry to say it, but there's a lot of evidence that gay marriage is unpopular with the public. It has lost every time it's been put on a ballot.

4. While I'm being impolite -- what's the unspoken donkey elephant in the room? Is Obama constrained here by the oft-cited social conservatism of black Americans? Or is he protected by tepid white liberals like me who cut him too much slack on this?

5. Our leaders need to lead.

And I could say more, but I think the last point is my bottom line.

I agree...mostly (0.00 / 0)
1. Money talks.

Most assuredly!

2. We don't do a good enough job holding leaders accountable.

Unfortunately true...I am as guilty as the next guy.

3. Sorry to say it, but there's a lot of evidence that gay marriage is unpopular with the public. It has lost every time it's been put on a ballot.

Here I disagree...A majority of Americans support gay marriage and the repeal of DADT in poll after poll...

Tragically, gay marriage has failed time and again due to huge influxes of cash from religious groups in support of hate and bigotry (kind of odd isn't it?).

The most recent battles occasioned the Mormon Church (in CA over Prop. 8) and the Catholic Church in Maine to LIE about what the real issues were in the debate...

And...Why is it okay to have the majority vote down the civil rights of a minority?

I just don't understand...

As for your 4th point I'll leave that for others to discuss.

Really? (4.00 / 1)
Got links for those polls?

To be clear, it is not OK for the majority to vote down rights -- but it keeps happening, and that creates a climate of fear around politicians who might otherwise advocate on this.

[ Parent ]
Let's go back to the original question: Has Obama/DNC/OFA done enough? (4.00 / 6)
Did they do enough in Maine? Are they doing enough to eliminate DADT and DOMA?

Raymond's lack of response is irrelevant to these questions. I do accept Kathy's explanation.

I understand completely (4.00 / 3)
why gay folks would want to flex their political muscle. Good for them.

If the Stupak/Pitts amendment goes into the final health insurance valentine bill, I believe women will do much the same thing. I'll be one of 'em.

Why wait until a bitter pill... (0.00 / 0)
Taylor Marsh joined the boycott on the 14th...

It's about our leaders supporting their base and not cajoling the right wing Dems who deserted the GOP.

You can read her reasons why here:

Eyes Wide Open (4.00 / 1)
I still feel good about my support and vote for Obama in the general election. There is still time for him. Think about it: He has not been in office for even a year.

But as far as I am concerned, the battle was lost in the Democratic primary process over gay rights. Two years ago, all the Obama supporters on this blog were defending Obama over gay rights. See this discussion on BH in December 2007: http://www.bluehampshire.com/showC...

Why is what he is doing or not doing on gay issues such a surprise?

Nobody can say that they did not vote in the Primary without their eyes open if they were reading Blue Hampshire.
