State Media Finally Notice UNH's Absurd MoE

by: Dean Barker

Sun Aug 01, 2010 at 08:11:07 AM EDT

See, in order for Landrigan to notice, a Democrat has to be ahead in the polls:
Shea-Porter has received plenty of free media attention following a trip to the Middle East and getting several spending projects for the district through the U.S. House.

Too much can be read into all the numbers when the margin of error in the congressional district races is plus or minus 6 percent.

It's worth noting that the Bass leads over Swett, 17 points, and Kuster, 18 points, are well outside that, however.

Note the re-hash, too, of the unbelievable  "free media" line.

I repeat: it is a minor miracle that Democrats are able to get a foothold in this state given the prevailing media paradigm.

And did you catch his Freudian slip? (4.00 / 1)
There's no chance in the 2nd District, with former Congressman Bass, a Peterborough Republican, still leading big time over the two Democratic candidates, Katrina Swett, of Bow, and Anne McLane Kuster, of Hopkinton.

Free Media (4.00 / 1)
Yeah, it's crazy, to get "free media" all you have to do is accomplish something something of import.

Wonder why Jeb Bradley never tried that. Seems so obvious now.

Having bought into the sports or game metaphor, the press (0.00 / 0)
is interpreting that its role, as the fourth estate, is to serve as another check that balances the powers that be.  Four entities on two see-saws achieving balance....  That's the ticket!  And totally boring.  But never mind.

But, if we grant that the press has an official role--for which they get paid--then it seems rather peculiar to be nattering about "free media."  After all, a formal position or role comes with obligations.  Moreover, if the press is to carry out its role in objective manner, it would create a conflict for them to be paid by the public officials whose performance they review.

"obligation" is a word unpleasant to conservative ears.

Instead of serving as a source of information, the fourth estate wants to be a counter-weight AND it wants to be financially supported by the people it covers--just like the princes of the church.

Oh, Dean... (0.00 / 0)
You'd think you'd be used to just about all media nowadays running scared from the words "liberal media bias".
There is no liberal media- there is a few leftover bastions of liberalism and a few more of moderation, but the seeds of Bill, of Rush and of Glenn wash over the sides, covering local media. We're going to have to admit that this site is probably the closest thing to a smart, left-of-center local news site for the Granite State- because we're the only big players willing to admit that we are liberal.
In the media, being liberal is dangerous. Not being liberal is safe, so being conservative is beloved. Though we need some conservatives in the media- we need an even mix of left, right and center- until the myth of LMB (liberal media bias) is debunked as the fraud that it is, we have no chance of having a truly fair press.
